Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

I'm with you. After seeing abarbs30 pictures, I think maybe all the variations of granite crystal are wrong. I'm in Houston and they are in Denver. If the dealership here had any true dedication to customer service I feel like they would have discovered this. Instead they tell me I'm one in 100 that would notice. I don't know if it's in my best interest to see what they come up with this time before I share this information with them or tell them in advance. I'm concerned if I tell them others are having the same issue they will say there is nothing they can do, that they used the manufacturer formula.

I think the best course at this time is to let them see what they can come up with. If it still doesn't match then pursue it further with your insurance and go to an independent shop.

And I would also let the owner and manager of your dealership know what that guy at their shop said to you. That was unprofessional and totally uncalled for.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

That's what I was leaning towards as well. I will follow up here when I have an update and provide the formula information if they can get it right.

I will for sure let the manager and owner know about my experience.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

the paint variations or tints of each color are true. Redline had several "tints" available when I was having my hood painted. The body shop I use had a Sherwin Williams rep come and match my "tint" perfectly. Also...my truck was scratched during unloading at the dealer when new on the rear hatch piece(above plate and tails) and the dealership gave me the choice of painting to match or ordering one from the factory. The first arrived and was a different "tint" of redline...yes JNAP painted rear piece was different from my truck that was painted one month earlier at JNAP.
Its up to the body shop to find the closest "tint" to your color.
BUT...in this instance....they mixed not the wrong tint....but the wrong 2nd stage/. Id say this is a tricoat paint.....like most of the WK2 paints. The basecoat went on first...then the pearl...then the clear. They CLEARLY chose the wrong pearl to add. Idiots....

It doesn't work that way. Even if they had the correct code, the paint won't match. Like others have said, there are numerous variations or "tints" to colors, and paint produced at different times won't exactly match. Thats why they need to match the color to the vehicle specifically.

On top of that the way the color is laid down has a lot to do with how the metallic flake aligns and how the final color looks.

Its not that simple.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

When I got an insurance quote on my Granite Chrystal (scratched hood) the body shop said they would have to blend into the front guards to match the newly sprayed hood. I spoke to another place about it and they said the same thing. I haven't had it done yet, and when I do, I will go with a professional custom paint shop, not this place that processes insurance jobs all day every day.

The custom shop will most likely blend also. Even if the paint match is 99%, ending at the edge of a panel will most likely be noticeable.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go to the best paint shop you can find, but don't be surprised if they take the same approach.

I won't be, but at least I will know the individual employees care about their workmanship, compared to just another job and the bigger place.

Thanks Scott - So you think they just added Pearl to the mixture even though it doesn't need it. I'm trying to figure out if I have them paint a test for me without pearl and I can hold it up to the car to see if its right.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

I usually don't get involved in paint discussions as opinions are vast and varied. I have been in the automotive paint industry for 30+ years from smash repair to OE supply.
After checking your colour on my formula look up with PPG their are three variants here in Australia (so the US would be similar) you have your Prime colour, then 1/ Bluer, Greener face, Redder flop 2/ Darker face, Lighter flop and 3/ Lighter, Bluer face, Redder flop.
As has been said already this allows for variation from the manufacturer, remembering there paint line is robotic and appliction is very hard to duplicate by hand, hence the variants.
Now the comment in the opening post regarding a paint chip has some merit as some paint manufacturers have these to make choosing the right variant easier, instead of spraying them all out to check.
I should add that checking the colour formula it does have a powder pearl in it, this does make a edge to edge repair difficult so this is why most shops would blend the colour into the ajioning panels.

Cheers

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

I appreciate you replying. When you say powder pearl, is that the big flakes you see in the pictures shining multi-colored or should it be more subtle. The gray on my vehicle matches. It's the multi-color specks that don't match. In the shade it's not super noticeable. In the sunlight it is a major difference.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

Any type of blend would still be a major difference with what they painted mine with. They had to blend the side panel where they chipped the paint and below the gas tank it has the colored specs and above it does not.
