As has been said already this allows for variation from the manufacturer, remembering there paint line is robotic and appliction is very hard to duplicate by hand, hence the variants.
Now the comment in the opening post regarding a paint chip has some merit as some paint manufacturers have these to make choosing the right variant easier, instead of spraying them all out to check.
I should add that checking the colour formula it does have a powder pearl in it, this does make a edge to edge repair difficult so this is why most shops would blend the colour into the ajioning panels.

Cheers
Thanks Adam - You insight is of huge help in this discussion. They matched the grey perfectly, my only problem is the size / amount of pearl in the paint. The factory paint doesn't show pearl in the sunlight, if its in there it looks to be the most minimal amount. Do you think they may have used the wrong pearl? Too Much? or could it be as others mentioned the angle which they applied it.

All the best,

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

The Granite is a single coat basecoat (no transparent pearl overlay) so the colour issue you are seeing is definitely the colour mix, some paint manufacturers only have about half the tinters in their tinting systems compared to the better / larger brands so their colours can be a compromise.
As a general rule it is best to stick with OE paint suppliers, in Aus that would be PPG, and BASF / Akzo Nobel. To answer Manyj's question, the flake you are seeing is the metallic flake, pearls are transparent.

However as has been said earlier, maybe they just got it wrong.

Lastly in the land down under we spell colour (color) the correct way (damn autocorrect)

Now stay tuned for my next thread, " does anyone know a good body shop in Charlotte?"
Ask your dealer where they get their paint work done.
Most dealers in any given area will tend to use the same external body shop if they don't have one themselves.

? Wonder why they didn't just look up the paint code, and ask their paint supplier about techniques. It IS a tad harder to match up metallics, but it isn't rocket science and any self respecting paint shop should be aware how to do it--and a good one will discuss the issues with you before doing work.

Really good shops will check the vehicle as well, but mainly to account for aging/fading of the paint, so the new paint won't necessarily be as it left the factory but as it currently is on the vehicle. Pretty much obsolete with newer paint technology.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

The more I put together the more it seems like they pulled the paint code off the truck, looked at the couple tints and chose one. Somehow there is alot of pearl in what they did and its either on the code by mistake or they added it by mistake. They should have brought it up with me but i'm sure they didn't think i'd notice, but its very noticeable. I'm waiting to see what MandyJ finds out from her shop. Maybe they will do hers right and give the correct formula

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

This is the latest update from my contact at the dealer: "Hey…was just about to email you

was just talking about your jeep with paint supplier. Still working on formula. Seems factory may have thrown us a curveball. An entirely new variance to the paint formula.

Will let you know as soon as I find something out."

Sounds like they color matched the paint and didn't use factory paint.I hate it when a BS thinks they can can color match a color. There is a reason they ask for your Vin when you order touch up paint.

Where do you buy "factory paint" and what factory does it come from?

Sorry, but you have no idea what you're talking about and everybody is trying to help this guy.

Paint is tinted to match each individual car, and Chrysler doesn't make or sell paint. There is a formula for each color, and its created on site by each paint manufacturer or repair shop. If the paint matches one granite GC, it may not match another exactly. Thats why it has to be matched to that vehicle itself.

Re: 2014 Repainted and flake doesn't match!!

This sounds like total BS, On a new car, the paint can be ordered by the vehicles paint code, for Granite Chrystal Metallic, the code is "PAU".....This paint is a two stage paint to my knowledge, the color/metallic coat and a clear top coat....The metallic is already in the base color paint......Any good automotive body and paint supply house can supply the paint. I have this same color Jeep, I custom ordered painted body side moldings, and they arrived and the paint on them was a perfect match, I also ordered some touch up paint to have on hand from another company, and it to was a perfect match....I'm no paint and body expert, but I have done some auto painting....It can get difficult matching up some older paints and colors where a car has had years of exposure to sun light and weather, resulting in some fading etc. Thats where knowledge and expertise of the painters or paint supply people play a big role, now they can even use computers to even get that perfect.
This just sounds like your body shop screwed up, which is too bad, I think I would ask my insurance company to see if they would allow another company to re do the paint work on your Jeep.....Good Luck, that sucks

With that said,
PPG,Sherwin Williams and Dupont all make paint specific to automobile brands. Most are vin specific as in the case the paint on vehicles is not coming out of the factory as designed. They make changes in the mixing or the applying of the paint in the factory. Adjustments to the paint sprayer and how it is applied can also make a difference in how much flack is applied.
Yes a "Repaint" is tinted to and individual car but they have to know the correct formula and technique in the repaint. Otherwise you have a hit and miss application. In the factory they may shoot 100 Grand Cherokees before the batch is remixed. And yes you are right manufactures do not make or sell paint but each paint is vin and brand specific. You can't take a generic gray metallic and mix it to match a Jeep Granite. It has to be Jeep specif. Also I learned a long time ago with metallic paint the application matters as much as the color mix. I would always take a repair back to the specif dealer's body shop as they should be trained in the factories process in a repaint.
Good luck but the only way it will look as factory is a respray.

The panel shop I went to uses a so called special camera which color matches paint. Not sure if gives accurate code or its by the human eye.

But yeah, even from ford my octane paint differs to another octane on the road. Color code is crap, need to match it with the car itself.
