2014 rust allready? normal?

Today I noticed some rust around hitch on my 2014 Jeep GC. Seems like a bad design as I can see salt might accumulate in this area easily. See photos. It was a tough winter but hitch on my 13 year old car is looking not much worse than this and it's been through some tough winters.

Car has been kept in a garage and washed after every snowstorm.

Should I be worried? I plan to keep this car for a long time. Wasn't expecting ANY rust on a car that is less than 1 year old. Should I talk to dealer?

I have a 7.5 year old Commander with essentially the same exact hitch design. At about 50,000 miles I have zero rust on the vehicle. My Wrangler on the other hand -- plenty of rust.

The difference? The Commander has lived its life in the desert Southwest and is garage kept. It is washed and dried every one to two weeks. It's only exposure to salt has been ocean air when we go to San Diego, and an occasional trip to the high country to play in the snow.

The Wrangler on the other hand, started life in NY and PA and is kept outside. It has seen PLENTY of salt in it's day. That stuff is nasty and does quick damage to metal.

I would address it with your service advisor, they probably won't do anything, but at least there would be a record of you lodging the complaint.

Any iron/steel components on a car will get rust. Just shoot it with some anti-rust protection and off you go.

My 4 month old GC is rusting in the same spot. I noticed while washing a few weeks back...I haven't even towed anything yet and the hitch is already rusting!

"Anything in particular that you can recommend?"

I live in Nebraska. I know a few things about rust. Salt, storms, flooded roads and mud, my Jeep has seen it all. My '96 XJ has nearly 300,000 miles on it. And I do use it off road to pull logs and get into camping spots and tree cutting areas. NO ONE believes me when they see it. I don't see any other Jeep that age without rust. Yes, I have had rust. The key is to control it as soon as you spot it! Use Rust Bullet (Google it) or POR15. Both are excellent coatings. They can both go over light rusted metal with minimal prep. You should top coat with another paint that can handle long term exposure to UV. Just Google both products. They are the best things I have found and my jeep at nearly 20 years...looks pretty darn good.

Re: 2014 rust allready? normal?

BTW, I tried to post a picture, but it wouldn't let me do it because I guess I'm too new to this forum. Shame, I've never been unable to show off my Jeep before...

Other than BFG tires and Alpine car stereo, 100% stock.

Re: 2014 rust allready? normal?

I've had good luck with:

Fluid FilmĀ® | Corrosion Preventative, Lubricant and Rust Inhibitor

Best part is it's easy application, penetrates into every nook and cranny and you don't really have to worry about over-spray etc.

Re: 2014 rust allready? normal?

I noticed the slightest bit of rust on my 2014 Trailer hitch also, i would like to keep it clean and rust free so this thread is helpful.

Question - Would Chrysler/Service do anything if asked?
