Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

That would be an impressive jump. They do show that as estimated... so they are maybe just getting excited? They show the '13 SRT8 at 4.8 seconds which makes more sense.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

I took a QUICK test drive of a white/black 14 Overland V6 tonight. I have also driven a 13 V6 before, but combined I have maybe 15 minutes of driving time in GCs so take this review for what its worth. Too dark for pics, sorry. For the record, I have a black/black 14 Overland V8 on order, expecting it towards the end of March.

Things I liked:

- The outside looks wonderful. I like the new headlights and front end. The plastic inserts below the headlights do look a little out of place, but not as big of a deal to me as I thought it would be. They might look out of place for other colors, on a black or white GC it probably won't stand out as much.

- The copper hue to the trim (black interior) was not as bold as the pictures make it out to be. I was nervous about this having ordered one this way already but I actually liked it. A bit different than the aluminum trim you see in many cars.

- The heaters came on automatically as it was 33 degrees out. Nice. Wish they would take effect a tad bit quicker though.

- It seemed like the seat bottoms were a bit more comfortable. I found them to be a bit hard in the 13. Maybe just wishful thinking.

- I did not find the electronic shifter to be annoying, I actually kind of liked it.

- The new nav screen is big, resolution is good, and it is very responsive.

Things that I didn't like so much:

- The nav screen is BRIGHT. Almost annoyingly bright at night. There is a button that turns it off, hopefully you can dim it or there is a "night" map mode where the display background is black.

- I was not so impressed with the V6 + 8 spd. It's still a V6 - sounds like one and drives like one. Didn't seem that much different with the 8 spd. I didn't drive for long or very hard. I enjoy driving and the sound and feel of the engine is something I consider in a car. Not all of you feel that way I am sure. At first I was not sure if a V8 was right for me, now I am convinced it is, glad I ordered it that way.

Not sure about:

- The new dashboard display. It seemed like there were a bunch of options, it wasn't simple enough to figure out in 1 minute, and I didn't have time to play around. Hopefully this screen can be dimmed a little bit too. However, it's not as bright as the 8.4.

Otherwise, the rest of the vehicle didn't seem too different from the 13, or maybe I'm forgetting something... Overall (and not surprisingly), the changes make the 14 a lot nicer than the 13 and are worth the extra $ in my opinion.

May be not 4.1 sec, but should be around .5 sec faster... Which makes it ~4.2 - 4.3 sec. It is not bad of an estimate since it should be low 4's.

does the SRT run 98 octane? or tuned for 91.. if 91 and you give it a decent dyne tune for 98 octane I expect you would see nice gain

Found info in the manual that describes how to dim the display. Looks like there is a setting for this to happen automatically at night. My guess is the one I drove wasn't set up this way, cuz it was REALLY bright.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

Just test drove the '14 with a Hemi up the steep part of I-70 out of Denver from Golden; brought a tear to my eye.

Rarely has so much hype lived up in reality. The '14 was awesome!

- The heaters came on automatically as it was 33 degrees out. Nice. Wish they would take effect a tad bit quicker though. Also very nice the heated steering wheel. Just warm enough to give this pleasant feel.

- I did not find the electronic shifter to be annoying, I actually kind of liked it. I liked it as well but I was taken aback that it moved on its own back to whatever position it started from. It is very nice, just different. Beats the BMW one anyways, at least that's my take.

- The new nav screen is big, resolution is good, and it is very responsive. Yep.

Things that I didn't like so much:

- The nav screen is BRIGHT. Almost annoyingly bright at night. There is a button that turns it off, hopefully you can dim it or there is a "night" map mode where the display background is black. I had the exact same feeling. Too bright. Based on the pictures we saw in the press releases there is a night mode (dark background) - I am sure the configuration is deep in the settings menu. The sales lady played around a bit with the settings, I saw the options for tilting mirrors and how you select near and far for the adaptive Cruise Ctrl.

- I was impressed with the V6 + 8 spd. It has just the right combo for a car that I am buying since I am not pretending it is a sports car. Yeah, in ECO mode it shifts very quickly, before 2000 rpm. In normal mode is certainly a bit more "peppy". And so what if I have to rev it higher to get it moving. I already have a "sports car" - my turbocharged Subaru will do 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds with a usable power band 2000-7000 rpm. If I need to fix my adrenaline rush and desire to manually shift gears, I just go drive that.

Not sure about:

- The new dashboard display. It seemed like there were a bunch of options, it wasn't simple enough to figure out in 1 minute, and I didn't have time to play around. Hopefully this screen can be dimmed a little bit too. However, it's not as bright as the 8.4. Yep, I also dislike the fact that there is quite a big contrast / transition between the TFT screen and the analog dials. I think Jeep would have been more elegantly served with either moving everything to digital displays OR sticking with analog for the 4 major function s(RPM/speed/fuel/temp) and incorporate a smaller color digital screen in the dashboard or ...or move everything to the 8.4 inch. I find things like the pictogram of the snow/mud./sand modes superfluous and redundant - you have the center console dial to tell you what mode you're in OR you could move that display to miniaturized dashboard one-liner displays. It is not a deal breaker and I am still getting sweaty palms knowing I will play with all that technology BUT it could have been a more elegant implementation.

Otherwise, the rest of the vehicle didn't seem too different from the 13, or maybe I'm forgetting something... Overall (and not surprisingly), the changes make the 14 a lot nicer than the 13 and are worth the extra $ in my opinion. Well I concur. I have driven before 2 Grand Cherokees. I had a 2011 Limited with 9 miles on board in Colorado, 2 years ago. It had everything - the HIDs, the navi, the heated seats, the tilting mirrors - but not the Quadra Lift. After 1000 miles I knew that Jeep would eventually sell me one. I also had a Laredo for a rental - I drove it to Montreal Canada and back - some 2000 miles. The new Jeep is not any different than the model it replaces in all other regards.
In blue is my contribution.
