Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

So I finally test drove the new '14 GC Limited this morning. Spec was: Limited, ORAII, Frost Interior, Remote CD, Power Sunroof, Uconnect RA4, Maximum Steel.

I loved it. The new model is simply awesome.

V6 was impressive coupled to the new 8-speed trans. I know this has been said a bunch, but I was thankful to experience it for myself this morning. Take-off from a stop was zippy. Acceleration in 50-70 mph range was a bit less impressive, but still quite good. I didn't wind up rpm's very far, as I believe I was the first driver - I guess it's a good sign that I didn't really have to. I want a quiet cabin, and was a concerned that the V6 would be too whiny, and the CRD would be too, um, diesely. However, early reviews for the CRD are positive in this regard, and I was satisfied with the V6 acoustics. (certainly the V8's are going to be more satisfying). I have been on fence between V6 gas and CRD, and am now happy I won't have to wait for CRD - V6 it is for me.

The new model maximum steel paint looked a little lighter to me than the '13. Anyone else have that experience? Still my favorite color - obviously to each his own.

Ride quality - I expected the ride to be a little mushy with the quadralift + 18" wheel/tire combination. I was surprised that it still felt quite stable. I've heard others describe the quadralift ride as 'marshmallow-like', even with the 20" rims - this was not my experience. I'd like to know what those folks are expecting out of a 5,000lb 4x4...maybe I'm missing something. I didn't do any hard cornering, but completed a few quick lane changes at hwy speed. Suspension felt appropriate. I'm guessing 20" wheel/tire combo will feel slightly stiffer.

UConnect and CD player. The new 8"+ interface is excellent. Much better all the way around vs the somewhat dated '13 system. The remote CD player is much less awesome. In fact, I found it quite obnoxious in such an otherwise well thought-out interior. The player takes up the lion's share of console storage, which wasn't huge to begin with. Boo.

I have on order: 2014 Overland V6, Maximum Steel, Adv Tech Package, CD player (unfortunately, this was already included in car I put deposit against).

I'm completely happy with the spec now, having driven the V6 and seen it for myself, except for the CD player it's coming with. I think the dealer ordered all of their 2014s with this option, fearing that no CD player would be a make/break decision for some of their customers. I think it will more often be the opposite. Unfortunate.

One last interesting note - Dealer had an additional window sticker, next to standard msrp sticker, showing a $6,999 "additional markup", bringing total to about $49K. I was told the additional markup was negotiable. No kidding. As this was the only 2014 on their lot, they'll probably convince someone to pay most of it.

BTW - Thanks to everyone in the forum for educating me - great information that I couldn't find anywhere else.

-Brett

I agree with most of what you wrote but I test drove V6 today and was not impressed. Yes, it was OK but it was not great. I would say adequate. If you want more fun you definitely have to look into V8 and CRD. That being said I ordered V6 today as I don't have $$$ for the diesel or want to pay $$$ to feed Hemi at the gas station.

Recently on a vacation trip to Northern California we got brand new Ford Escape with 2.0L EcoBoost engine as rental. That thing was impressive ... It was hard to keep the smile off my face when zooming through the mountains. Didn't like the styling and didn't care for the car but performance and handling was VERY impressive.

Yes, why would their be an additional markup on the vehicle. That is a joke. Negotiate...Hell they shouldn't have it. If they don't, walk away.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

Roki,

Maybe we're in agreement, I'd further that given my high expectations for the vehicle, the V6 is adequate. This configuration was a significant improvement over 6-cyl SUVs I've owned/driven in the past.

The question I have a hard time with is this: If right this moment, my on-order Overland V6 was sitting next to a Limited CRD with Lux II/ORAII/AdvTech/etc, both available to be driven home, and for nearly the same price - would I really settle for the V6?

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

Yes, the $7k thing was a little obnoxious. I have negotiated the forum-recommended several% under-invoice pricing for my overland. Hopefully there will be no funny business when it arrives. I'm anticipating the standard cash-grab tactics during close.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

I understand how you can feel the '14 V6 isn't anything special, especially after driving the '14 hemi. I have a Buick Enclave V6 with a 6 spd tranny, and it's dead in the water next to the Pentastar V6 with the 8 spd. The Buick weighs about the same as the JGC, but it feels 1,000 lbs. heavier when compared to it.

If your going to order from the dealer, get the OTD price before you order and agree to it. Then they can't change anything on you because they have all the numbers. Hopefully you get no funny business when it comes to that time.

I would not. I would pick CRD but I did the calculations and even loaded Limited CRD is more expensive than Overland V6. I wanted diesel initially but I'm pushing my budget allredy and I cannot spare any extra. 4.5k extra is just to much. Initially was hoping that CRD = HEMI price wise but did not happened.

To make things worse you have to wait until end of april to even be able to otder diesel which will mean delivery early July if you make first allocation and diesel will not get delayed. Realistically might be end of summer when you will get your car. That is a big constraint for me. My truck just crossed 200k and just cannot to wait any longer. Maybe if it was winter I could do it but not over summer.

Honestlly, I think Chrysler blow it time wise and price wise when it comes to diesel.

According to Milous, the production date for the crd is April 22. That should have them to the dealers in May, not the end of summer.

Of course, everything is subject to change until your Jeep is in your driveway.

Is this production date or order date? Sceptical anyway... Look at LUX II package on Limited. How many times this got pushed, still not available.
