Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

The diesel has 50 less HP than the V6. Why would you expect it to be faster in full-throttle acceleration?

It will likely feel faster and less strained around town, because it produces more power at lower RPMs than the V6 (this is all that "torque" is). Rather than revving the V6 to 4,000 RPM, the diesel will be turning something like 2,200 RPM for the same power*. This is a much more pleasant experience in my book. But if you are willing to rev the V6 and listen to it screaming, it will always be faster, because at high RPMs it produces more power than the diesel.

* Numbers pulled out of my ass, but probably close

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

guys we have had the diesel for 2 years here and its quicker than both V6 and V8 - these times are with the current 5speed
Jeep Grand Cherokee Powertrain

V6 0-100Kpm ( 62Mph) = 9.1sec ( read slug)
V8 0-100Kpm ( 62Mph) = 8.7sec
CRD 0-100Kpm ( 62Mph) = 8.2sec

so with the 8speed we now know the CRD will do around 7.7 sec so you could expect about 0.5sec off the V6 & V8 as well

even if the 8spd improves the V6 & V8 by one second for some reason, the diesel is still quicker and easier to drive and has better economy..

if you want real speed the SRT is the only option at sub 5 sec... but hey its an SUV

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

I've seen that page before and that's what was setting my expectations of the CRD at least matching and hopefully beating the V6. I'd love to see the same driver running all three engines in a 4x4 to get best of 5 times for each.

Those numbers (from the Aussie Jeep website I believe) have been thrown around here for quite a while, but I think it's also been agreed that they're way off. We in the States can't speak to the CRD's acceleration, but the Pentastar and Hemi are not 9.1 and 8.7 second vehicles.

I could just as easily throw out Motor Trend's numbers in which they got 8.4s for the '11 Pentastar and 7.3s for the '11 Hemi.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

Those numbers from Australia are very suspect, the only way they are valid is that the old transmissions did a poor job of keeping the non "turboed" engines in their sweet spot.
The other vehicles with similar powertrain choices and 7/8 speed transmissions (Touareg, ML) have the following 0-60 times.

Touarag V6: 7.4 sec
Touareg TDI: 7.9 sec
ML350 gas : 7.3
ML350 Diesel: 7.3
ML550: 5.3.

I find it very hard to find that in the Diesel will outrun the gas V6 much less the Hemi with the 8 speed transmission across the board. I left the Audi Q7 out because the V6 is supercharged which alters the performance characteristics.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

If the CRD matches the V6 in 0-60 performance I will be satisfied... if it actually beats it I will be ecstatic.

I will bet $1,000 it will beat the V6. Should come close to the V8.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

Oranges and pineapples. Table is 0-100 kph (62.5 mph) not 0-60 mph. Of course it will be slower. That 9.1 V6 becomes 8.7 which sounds reasonable. 8.7 becomes 8.4 just if linear, even less if non.

Keep in mind that it is torque that gets you moving. HP just determines the top end.

Re: 2014 Test Drive Reviews

This is a popular misconception that Diesel vehicles are "quicker" because they make more torque. Horsepower and torque are two interrelated measuements such that:
horsepower = (Torque x RPM)/5252. From that formula it is clear that the two are related measurements and vary in direct relationship to each other). The gasoline engine will be faster largely because it spins up to higher RPMs much faster than a diesel can. There is a reason that all the fastest cars in the world are gas powered and not diesel (please do not bring up the Audi/Peugeot LeMans cars because in endurance racing things such as making less pit stops makes a huge difference).
