I wasn't sure if I should opt for the HEMI or the diesel.

Now, I am. I thought the diesel wouldn't pay off soon enough but considering the way may financing will be structured (84 months financing), the additional payment for the diesel over the HEMI will be $30/month.

I used 15k miles/year and the current regular and diesel prices in my area and 15 mpg for the HEMI and 23 for the diesel. Using these conservative numbers, the diesel saves me $80/month on fuel.

Urea isn't a cost- or inconvenience-factor either ($64/10K miles) - so I guess I'm sold on the CRD if the Jeep becomes my mother's daily driver.

A vehicle averaging 16 MPG is simply not an option for her as daily driver.

That depends on the engine you are comparing it to. In regards to the regular V6, you are probably right. But to be fair, you have to consider that the diesel outperforms this engine.

However, compared to the HEMI (which is closer to the CRD in regards to performance), the CRD can virtually pay for itself from day 1 on.

Yeah, rather entertaining with the whole "passive-aggressive Man Challenge" theme

I don't know that your mpg numbers are accurate. (You may be using a 6 speed V8 number, not the 8 speed V8 number.) But, in any event, please check your math. 15K mi/year = 1250 mi/month. Your diesel usage will be 54.35 gal/month. Your V8 usage will be 83.33 gal/month. 29 more gal/month of V8 fuel. To save $80/month on fuel, diesel would have to be $2.75/gal more than your V8 grade (can run on reg, but Chrysler says mid-grade preferred). I don't know where you live, but in the southwest, diesel is nowhere near $2.75/gal more than mid-grade.

I don't think my numbers are off.

I didn't calculate those numbers - I used fueleconomy.gov.

15K miles/year with 55% city and 45% highway with regular fuel on the MY13 HEMI 4x4 at a current regular gas price of $3.75/Gal. results in an annual fuel cost of $3,750 for the HEMI.

For comparison, I used the MY13 Mercedes ML350 Bluetec 4matic since the CRD is not yet listed. The ML is listed at 23 MPG combined - a number the CRD should match. Using the same numbers as before but a fuel price of $4.09/Gal. for diesel, the annual fuel cost for the diesel is listed at $2,650.

So let's say the new 8-speed cuts 5% of the HEMI's consumption (I highly doubt it's going to be significantly more) and the CRD is matching the Mercedes (I have to add though that the Benz is rated 20city/28highway and the 4x4 CRD should be 21city/28 highway). I also used the cost of regular gas on the HEMI. If you run mid-grade as recommended, the CRD will save you even more.

So, using regular on the HEMI:

HEMI: $3,750 x 95% (8-speed improvement) = $3,560
CRD: $2,650

$3,560-$2,650=$910 annual fuel savings
$910:12=$75 monthly fuel savings.

Using mid-grade, the annual cost of the HEMI increases to $3,900:

HEMI: $3,900 x 95% (8-speed improvement) = $3,705

$3,705-$2,650=$1,055
$1,055:12=$88 monthly fuel savings.

So, where do you think there is an error?

I think you misread my previous post. I clearly claimed that the DIESEL would save me $80/month on fuel - NOT the HEMI..
