I have question about this new 8 speed transmission on JGC 2014.
I searched about that and I figured it out that the first gear ratio of this is 4.71 and comparing it to the current one on V8 HEMI that is 3, there is a huge difference between them.
Then I checked the torque curve of the V8 and the V6 and these are the results for the low rev outputs:
*
Rev***** 1k******************* 2k
V8****** 300lbs.ft********** 350lbs.ft
V6****** 180lbs.ft********** 250lbs.ft
*
The calculation shows that in first gear (the gear that is used mostly in crawling and heavy Off-Roading) the output torque of the V6 with new transmission is completely comparable with the V8 with the previous transmission.
*
Rev**************************************** ************* 1k******************* 2k
V8(first gear with old trans.)***************** 900lbs.ft********** 1050lbs.ft
V6(first gear with new trans.)*************** 850lbs.ft********** 1180lbs.ft
*Then I want to know if these calculation are correct or not and if so can we conclude that the off-road performance of the V6 with the new transmission is similar to the old V8 or not?
*
Thank you all.
Seems to be correct, but you still have to add in the rear gear too. Which I believe the V6 is getting bumped to a 3.45 from the 3.09. I believe the hemi keeps the 3.45.
I have driven the Ram 1500 with the 8 speed and it runs very well and shifts very smoothly. Based on driving that truck I think we're going to be happy with the 8 speed in the JGC. All the engines should perform better with it. The truck runs better than I expected it too and acceleration on freeway was effortless and the truck was going 85 with ease . Based on how that truck ran they did the tuning on those engines / tranny combos to make it a very workable unit. The wranglers have that engine and those guys are happy with the old tranny and it pulls fine off road for them. I think we'll be happy with what ever engine we choose to suit our needs. It ran circles around last years JGC with the V6 and the 5 speed. JMO.
Loveracing 1988, thanks I'm glad you posted up that new rear gear information I was hoping that they'd change it but didn't see it anywhere (probably a newbie thing). The Ram didn't have the 3.55 but had something along the lines of a 3.27 or something. The previuos JGC seemed weak in the mountains because of those 3.09 gears on the V6. We have some long grades out west and this new gear ratio and tranny should make a world of difference. I still don't understand why they aren't putting the electronic limited slip in the off road pkg for the V6, yet you can get it with the Hemi and CRD. I still haven't seen pics ( or have any idea where they are) of all the interiors for the different models which have different fabrics etc.
All engines get 8 speed transmissions, but not the same 8 speed.
The V6 gets its own version. Whether the gearing is different or it uses lighter duty components is a mystery to me. But it could have something to do with excluding QuadraDrive.
The V6 used to have the 5 speed, while the Hemi had the 6 speed.
Note that they swapped gears so the 8spd V8 now has the 3.09. Any 4X2 could spin tires (V6 not as far) if you could turn the traction controll off. I do not know if a '14 can.
