2014 Transmission Fluid 8 spd

ok so I have been going over the maintenance that will be needed on my 2014 5.7 Grand Cherokee and I noticed that there is no recommended change or check for the transmission fluid on the 8spd, doesn't even have a dipstick. So reading farther I see this

"Transmission Fluid And Filter Changes
Under normal operating conditions, the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle. Routine fluid and filter changes are not required. However change the fluid and filter if the transmission is disassembled for any reason."

Now I typically keep new vehicles a long time usually about 9 or 10 years and as such have always done regular trans fluid changes as I believe this is often a neglected area of maintenance that can lead to issues later in a cars life. I am not a big believer at all in fill for life fluids.

So my question is when this 8 spd on this Grand Cherokee blows up at 130,000 miles from fouled fluid just tow it to the dealer and the Maximum care warranty will cover it as this is fill for life fluid right?? Don't even give a thought to any type of trans service under normal use? Sounds strange to me but that's what it says and maximum care is unlimited miles/years.

Maybe I am just being old school. Nothing to be concerned with now but maybe I will revisit the topic in a few years lol

If you're worried about it, ask your service manager via e-mail so you have it in writing later.

Keyword= "normal".

Found in a service document:

The 8HP45 transmission is “fill for life”, so there is no regular service interval, except for severe service.

No definition is given for "severe service"...

Re: 2014 Transmission Fluid 8 spd

GM is up to 100,000 for tranny fluid on some models.

Manufacturers have been working hard to reduce maintenance intervals, while lots of service departments still try to push the old standards. My salesman said his service manager is always complaining that he tells customers about following the EVIC for oil change intervals. The service manager wants him to tell customers to ignore it and have it done every 3,000 miles.

These debates will go on for at least two more generations of buyers, or until we are all driving electric cars.

Re: 2014 Transmission Fluid 8 spd

When I had my 2008 GC I followed the recommended service intervals and the tranny service was a big $ number. If you kept the Jeep for 150,000 miles you were paying the equivalent of a new tranny just in service fees.

That is a good point Milous do they consider serve service to be towing 7400 lbs up a mountain every day you drive it or is severe service considered stop and go traffic while commuting to work?

If I operate under normal conditions which I do and I bring in a blow up tranny at 130,000 and it is determined it failed from fouled fluid what is to keep them from saying well you used this jeep in severe conditions and that caused the fluid to foul so maximum care does not cover it?

Re: 2014 Transmission Fluid 8 spd

On kind of a side note... a lot of the tranmissions are going this way now. My friend's 04 Explorer V6 had just under 300,000 miles. Rear end had been rebuilt twice and 9 bearings later but sealed Tranny was still good even with some boat towing.

Now saying that, I have always changed the oil in my transmission and diffs on the severe service schedule. I will likely pay to have it done when I get there.

Agree I have seen other cars with the 100,000 mile recommendation but this is the first time I have ever seen this statement "the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle. Routine fluid and filter changes are not required" They are saying don't do it if you operate the vehicle in normal conditions which I think is a big statement now mix that with the maximum care and well ok lets see how it goes.

I guess that over the years both the fluids and mechanical parts have improved. If this was a new, Chrysler designed transmission, I might be skeptical. But this transmission comes from a company that specializes in transmissions and has a great reputation.

For anyone who is afraid they may have a problem with a warranty claim, by all means have the service done and keep your receipts.

Re: 2014 Transmission Fluid 8 spd

Regarding Max care,

Since the trans fluid is no longer a maintanance item, spec. to last the life of the car Max care should cover the cost of replacing fouled fluid? What do you guys think? I am going to try and get a rider that states trans fluid is included when I buy my max care. Ha HA good luck to me on getting it.

P.S.
when I read the maintanace schedule, there is another part that is inpect only. I dont remember if its the axels or diff? By rights this to should be included in an all inclusive warranty also. I'll say it before you guys do, keep dreaming Will.
