2014 v6 Overland Towing Review

Alright guys, I have had my new overland V6 for about to weeks and I just got back from my first 4-wheeler trip with it. I am writing this because when I was looking into this truck I could not find much on towing with the V6. Some back round, I have a big trailer holds 5 full size atv's from tip to end it is 27' long and with the machine and gear I have now it weighs about 4000 lbs. My last tow vehicle was a 2008 Acura MDX Sport, the MDX did a very good job towing a load and got 11-12 mpg doing it but the trailer was about 3400 lbs and a little smaller then. The new Jeep did great, the trip was about 300 miles and I got 11.5 mpg driving 65 - 75 mph. I love this transmission it always seem to find the right gear and towing this load it was in 6th most of the time. So the big question is would the V8 been better at towing this load, I would say yes, but would it have gotten 11.5 mpg i don't know, I can say my old 2000 JGC V8 got 9 to 10 mpg towing my then 2500 lbs trailer. So I will say the V6 is a fine tow vehicle, when you look at that whole package it is a great truck show me another vehicle that will tow this load and get me over 20 mpg daily driving and over 25 mpg on the highway. I wanted and waited for the diesel but after I saw it was going cost me at least 6k more, likely more because I most likely would not get 4k off the msrp like I did. Hope this is helpful.

I tow a 3200 lb boat in the mountains with the 12' hemi and I get between 11 to 12 mpg. The tow/haul switch holds my trans no higher than 4th gear. My daily driving in summer is 17.5 mpg and in winter I get 15.5 to 16 mpg. Thanks to the gas formulation in my state. Gotta love the government.

You found out what I also found out towing my boat; the 8 speed is never at a loss for the right gear and I have found that it is very rare that I have to exceed 3500 rpm on any hill so far. I love it! I also did a quick trip last week (no boat) of 225 miles, a/c on the whole time, Pa turnpike & New Jersey 4 lane too so I was running 55 to 70 mph for most of it and the end result was 26.1 MPG! I was quite happy, the car has around 4600 total miles on it. Dave
