2014 V6 versus 2013 V8

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the 2014 V6 actually puts down better acceleration numbers than the 2013 V8, due to the 8-speed automatic in the 2014. Is this true?

I found a Car & Driver road test of a heavy (meaning fully loaded) 2014 V6 Overland, and they posted 7.5 seconds from 0-60mph and a 15.7 second quarter mile time. That's not bad at all for a V6 SUV that weighs 5000 lbs.

Re: 2014 V6 versus 2013 V8

I know my 2004 JGC with the 4.7 ltr highput V8 feels much quicker, more responsive and strains way less than my current 2014 v6 with the 8 speed, even on sport mode.

Even though it is actually slower? The mind is a powerful thing I guess, but there is no way that your old 4.7 is as quick as the new V6.

For the OP. Yes the new V6/8spd is just as quick as the old Hemi/5spd. Just think about it in terms of riding a bike with 5 speeds vs. something with 18 plus. Just think about how easy it is to pedal away quickly in one of those lower gears. On the same note, the new Hemi/8spd is quicker as well. Finally makes it what a V8 should be. So every '14 Hemi will blow the doors off the V6.

I too have a 2004 JGC 4.7L HO. It has incredible power and acceleration. I drove a V6, and I have to agree, my 4.7L HO definitely is quicker.

I had a 2000 JGC 4.7 as well it made a lot of noise but it was no way as fast as fast as my new V6 oh and I sold that car because that 4.7 got me 12 to 13mpg all the time. Highway city didn't matter. Buy far the worst gas mileage I have ever had in a vehicle.

Truck Trend just published a 2014 v6 vs v8 comparison.
They got 0-60 at 7.7 seconds, and it ran the quarter mile in 15.8 seconds at 88.4 MPH.

Just for reference, the v8 did it in 6.6 seconds and through the quarter in 14.9 seconds at 92.8 mph.

Both of those are slightly slower than car and driver's numbers, but fairly proportional to them.

I believe the old WJ platform weighed about 1,000 lbs less, so that would make a huge difference in why it felt quicker.

Re: 2014 V6 versus 2013 V8

A 2012/2013 V8 Hemi will be a tad quicker than even a 8 speed 6 cylinder from a dead stop to all the benchmarks like 0-60, 1/4 mile etc. Too much HP to overcome even with better gearing. What is lost in all this is that at certain rolling speeds the Hemi will be quite a bit faster if the "pseudo" 6 speed kicks down into the Hemi's sweet spot. My 2012 really moves out at certain speeds around town and on the highway. It also can get caught a little off guard at the bottom of some gears where it is geared a little tall.
The 2014 Hemi 8spd cures all that however!

Re: 2014 V6 versus 2013 V8

Those of you with WJ V8s who feel they are quicker than the 2014 V6...be sure you turned Eco mode off on the 2014.

I have a neighbor who traded a 2012 Hemi on a 2014 V6 and says he doesn't miss the Hemi at all. That same neighbor traded a 2011 V6 on the Hemi because of power.

Sorry. You'll have to line up against one to see. The '14 V6 matched the 0-60 and1/4 and was quicker in both 30-50 & 50-70 passing in Car and Driver tests. Your pseudo 6 spd still isn't as sweet as a real 8spd. The only acceleration test where the older V8 "won" was by one tenth to 100 mph. Unfortunately the V6 still keeps pulling stronger there and has a higher governed top speed. I would be glad to do a rolling test against your Hemi just so I can see the look on your face in my mirror. The gearing on the old Hemi is awful. It is like a 1960's 3spd that had two overdives added.

Re: 2014 V6 versus 2013 V8

While it is a little off topic,I have to chime in on the WJ numbers.
WJ 4.7 HO
Motor Trend 0-60 6.9
15.4 @ 86.6 for the 1/4
Motor week 0-60 6.7
15.2 @ 88 for the 1/4

Yep the lower weight helps a bunch, but still no hiding it was quite a bit quicker than the current v6 if a fair bit thirstier.
I have often wondered how a new v6/8 speed would drive in the lighter chassis.

cheers

Re: 2014 V6 versus 2013 V8

JohnC. You are absolutely on anytime you want to go. I live in the Phoenix area. I am a Jeep fan. The 8 speed appears to be a big improvement. There appears to be a few glitches with rough shifting, etc. I'm sure Jeep will get it perfected. My 6 speed has worked perfectly, as my Jeep has been trouble free at 40K.
I keep seeing all the V-6 guys over the years try to justify not getting the Hemi by bragging about what appears to be in real world driving a few, 1-3 MPGs advantage for the most part. With the way I drive, it would probably be less.

There hasn't been a lot of Hemi testing but Car and Driver compared the 2011 Hemi vs the LR4. The Hemi did 7.3/15.4@90. They did passing from 45-65@4.0 sec. That is better than your 8speed,6 cyl, 7.5/15.7@90. The 6cyl 8 speed passing from 50-70@5.2 sec. Not apples to apples, but again, your not looking in you rear view mirror at me.

For me, I would never buy a 4x2 Jeep. Defeats the purpose of a Jeep IMO. I also would never buy a 6cyl over a V8 in general, if they are close in price and didn't need a 6cyl for some special reason/purpose. Too each his own my Jeep brother.
