2014 V8 transmission software update. Get it done or no?

Mods, I wasn't sure which section this best fit into, so if this isn't the right one put it where it needs to be. Thanks

I took my April 2014 built 2014 V8 Summit into Jeep today for its first complimentary oil change. Upon completion he told me there were 3 updates available for it that can all be performed free of charge on a scheduled visit. I wanted to run this by you guys first because I know some people have experienced issues after updates and wanted to see if anyone else got this update done and noticed any difference whatsoever for better or for worse.

Like I stated I have a late built 2014 V8 with no noticeable tranny issues. Its seems to work perfectly fine, however if I had to nit pick sometimes at WOT it feels like the first gear it gets into feels sluggish, then after a shift it seems to start pulling hard. Its probably not even a problem just a normal characteristic of the tranny. So besides what I just mentioned, the tranny seems perfect.

08CHZFLASH01 Software flash update for TCM (flash software 1) -Tranny update I believe

08CHVFLASH02 Software flash for PTS -Park assist he said

08CHZFLASH03 Software flash for TPM -Tire pressure system update he said

So those are the three things the paperwork says. There are no other numbers regarding the specific updates. So does anyone else have a 2014 V8 that had software updated? Good, bad? Dont bother?

Thanks,
James

I have an early build 2014 (march 2013)and probably had a dozen flashes on various modules including two on the 5.7 trans. My trans had no issues i would complain about but the flashes cleaned up performance in eco mode, improved some of the low speed lugging when mds kicked in early. My dealer is one that just automaticly flashes all available without asking. The flashes just fixed and improved issues no bad effects cocerning all i have had the past 2.5 years. I will say if you notice any unusal operation after flashes do the battery cable rest (pull battery cable for 30 minutes or more) it allows everything to reset and sync the various modules. I had to do that two different times after the hvac an pcm updates. Just my opinion but the techs should be doing that after they flash anyway. So my dealer has made me a believer in flashing to the latest to gain even minor improvements but im sure there are plenty here that will say dont touch it unless you have major issues. Good luck

Re: 2014 V8 transmission software update. Get it done or no?

Thanks for the response. Now that you mention it I do notice mainly while driving in my subdivision like after a slow turn you can feel the MDS still engaged after you get back into the throttle, then after a second or two you can feel all cylinders kick in.
So you say it helped a little with things like that? As long as you didn't notice any issues afterwards is all I'm concerned about, and any improvements is all the better. He said the other two updates had to do with park assist and tire pressure system...neither of which have any noticeable issues. He says most of the time you won't notice software updates anyway. It's all "behind the scenes" kinda changes.

When you say pull battery cable, do you disconnect just the negative from the battery under the seat? Also, do you lose all of your personal settings?

Yes id say when you are lite on the throttle and getting into the throttle at lower speeds it felt like MDS was a little late shutting off or it engaged when RPMs were too low and you got a little of what I call low speed lugging. Nothing bad or problem some just something I noticed. The 5.7 trans flash I had helped that a little, nothing dramatic just seemed to lessen that effect a small amount so its not much noticeable. I don't think that flash will cause you any issues and if it were me I would do it. If you had the v6 trans I would not be saying this unless the problem was bad given the problems they had with those ones. But the 2014+ 5.7 trans setup has reported very few problem on here. Mine was a march 2013 build most issues I had early on were flash related. I have no issues now and no complaints on the jeep all is good after the dozen or so flashes, currently I have all available flashes in place there are none outstanding. one thing to remember about the flashes is in most cases the jeeps rolling off the line now have that same upgraded firmware in them so the flash is just bringing you up to the version the new cars have or closer to it provided the hardware is the same.

yes unhook negative directly from battery under seat for 30+ minutes. None of the presets are lost except for the equalizer on the stereo, the three bars go back to zero. That's all I have noticed when reset and I have done the reset 3 or 4 times.

I had a conversation with one of the techs at the dealer and he told me that you would be surprised how much chatter goes on between the dozen or so modules and updates to one can possibly impact other seemingly unrelated ones. He agreed that any strange behavior induced by a flash to remove the cable and let all the modules come back up together gracefully. think Microsoft windows you don't go in and try to troubleshoot a stumbling application as a first try, you just restart the computer and see if that takes care of it if not then you move on to other possible reasons.

Re: 2014 V8 transmission software update. Get it done or no?

I think the V8 update was also to delay up shifts as some customers complained that it upshifted too soon. With the abundant torque of the Hemi, I like my up shifts as quickly as possible, so no update for me. In fact, no recalls or updates since I bought it new in Sept. 2013 for the dealer to screw up something in the vehicle. It's been flawless and I want to keep it that way!

Re: 2014 V8 transmission software update. Get it done or no?

Is there a way to tell if these flashes have been done? I have an August built overland with the hemi and was just in the dealership to get my headlights replaced and they didn't mention any flashes. So, I'm curious if the dealer flashed them before I bought it (in April 2015).

The dealer can tell but we can't tell. If they flash it should be on your receipts. With that recent of a build you are probably in pretty good shape. Early 14s had many later 15s have most of that in them not as many available. You can go back and look at the tsbs and that will at least tell you what was available for your date range. Some dealers automatically load them all and some you have to beg and demonstrate you have the related issue.
