Re: 2014 vs 2015 Summit/Overland - Future Resale

Which interior you want in a Summit also comes into play...MY15 offers a third interior that for some of us is the 'only' acceptable option. If that's not important to you and the other factors are as you state...including paying for "most" of a MaxCare Extended Service Contract (it's NOT a warranty... ) then the MY14 is the way to go if you like the vehicle that's available. And exterior color choices are going to be very limited for a few months if you need to order a MY15 to get what you want due to the factory paint system changeover that's about to start...

Re: 2014 vs 2015 Summit/Overland - Future Resale

Not to hijack the OP's thread [well maybe a little] but what is a reasonable discount off a new MY14 still on a dealer's lot, whether in $ or % terms, off invoice not including any year end incentives from Jeep?

Have looked at a few online and found only a few of invoice less the Jeep incentive, most are the MSRP less the incentive [a non-starter] Would have thought dealers would want to get the '14's off their lot, despite the low carry charge with interest rates so low.

Also: how does one determine the build date? Is there a way using the VIN? Is it on the window sticker?

Thanks

The build date is on the VIN sticker in the drivers door jam area. You will see a month/yr on that sticker and an MDHXXXXXXX code which indicates the month day and hour the car was made. You can also get some idea of build date by looking at the last 6 digits of the VIN if you watch the inventory of VINs over time. The May/June cars I've been looking at had the last 6 digits in the 5XXXXX range. The January build car I looked at earlier in the year was in the 400XXX range.

Re: 2014 vs 2015 Summit/Overland - Future Resale

Actually, the difference in the vin# spread is incorrect. While I thought it true, when I was just looking to locate a Summit from various dealers I found two that were built the same week with a vin spread of 45000.

You can look at the sticker to see the build date. At the bottom left you see the vin#. To the right you see the VON#. To the right of the von, you will see a four digit number. My number is 1027, which indicates that the vehicle was built on Oct. 27th.

VINs don't come off the line sequentially...

Check if the 2015 has dual exhaust, because Jeep got rid of it on V6s I believe.

Got rid of duals only on the cheaper models. And not all of them either.

My point is the depreciation on a MY14 is more than the discount you are getting verses a MY15, IMO.

That is kind of the sense that I got looking at low mileage used '14's and trade in value given on some websites.

That said, what is the "average" [if such a thing exists] depreciation for a vehicle 1+ years after the MY became available? 15% off invoice? 20% off invoice? Is there a rule of thumb for JGC's?

Re: 2014 vs 2015 Summit/Overland - Future Resale

I really don't have that information, but someone told me a vehicle looses 1/3 of it's value once it drives off the lot as a used car. For prior year WK2, new, my guess is $6,000+/-.

Re: 2014 vs 2015 Summit/Overland - Future Resale

egjc: If you've not already pulled the trigger on a '14 I, personally, am glad I held out since end of June for the '15 Summit. Driving a '14 Summit CRD (parent's) and a '15 Summit CRD (ours) on the same roads, accelerating the same way, the noise control of the '15 makes it much quieter. It's much more solidly in "luxury quiet interior". Under heavy acceleration you can't tell it's a diesel and the only real sound is the transmission/tires. With the '14 you can hear the engine and tell it's a diesel (but do have to listen carefully). When my dad first got in ours he didn't think it would make a difference. After a short drive he admitted it makes a big difference.

Is it worth it to everyone? Absolutely not. To us, we love it being quieter.
