2014 vs 2016 pentastar

Still debating as to what I'll buy when my VW gets bought back. I commute into Boston and around Boston every day sitting in heavy traffic. My diesel does great because of the fuel economy but also low end torque. Is the '16 that much of an improvement that I'd be better buying a new '16 vs. a used 14? I'm planning on keeping this vehicle as long as I can wth a max care warranty

Re: 2014 vs 2016 pentastar

If you want lifetime max care, which is pretty affordable a lot of members elected to get.
It needs to be under 12mos 12k miles. Not sure if original owner is required too.

There have been other enhances too between 14 and 16 depending on trim.

I'm on my 3rd one since 2014 because of upgrades.

Re: 2014 vs 2016 pentastar

If you test drove both back to back power differences would not be noticeable. Some people will claim they do, but in the end 5 HP or whatever it is will never be felt in the seat of your pants. The torque curve has changed, but again I didn't feel it. I went between my 2015 HA and a 2016 HA. There were however plenty of other changes though so thats something you will have to determine for yourself. See if you like the start/stop feature. '14 doesn't have it, '16 does. I personally would buy new, but thats just me :-)

Re: 2014 vs 2016 pentastar

I'd get new if possible. But, honestly how much torque do you need in Boston? You rarely go over 20 mph.

hahaha. this is true. Which is one of the reasons I was asking about the new engine. I think I might be interested in the start and stop given how much I spend in traffic. I really wanted the V8 but it just doesn't make sense. My TDI does 35mpg sitting in traffic all day long but I do spend a lot of time on the highway as well. I'm addicted to getting good MPG but I'm tired of driving a car and want to get back into a jeep. I won't buy the EcoDiesel due to the complexities and challenges I've already experienced with my TDI (and seen here researching the EcoDiesel).

Go with a 16 if they figure out how to disable the auto stop/start. That would drive me insane...

My 2 cents on the V6 Pentastar is that it's very capable in certain situations but not 100% of the time. I have a 2015 Summit with the V6 and I think the engine is a dog with fleas for the most part, and I would buy the Hemi if I had it to do over. I stayed away from the V8 because I didn't want the extra upfront cost but considering the average fuel economy I get around town of 14 to 15 with the V6 I would rather have the Hemi for the power in moving this big rig around.

In Sport mode it's quite zippy but without it there's a very noticeable lag in acceleration much of the time. When accelerating from a complete stop it will get up and go if I stomp on it, but if I'm accelerating from anything other than a complete stop the engine just feels gutless. I know part of it is the electronic throttle response that controls unintended acceleration but part of it is the engine. I'm sure much of this could be alleviated if the torque was improved on the Pentastar without really worrying much about bumping up the horsepower.

I haven't driven a 2016 to see how it compares, but like others have said I doubt there is much of a difference from the 2015. It will be a big difference coming from the diesel you have but like you said you want to get back in a Jeep so the tradeoff might just work.

Re: 2014 vs 2016 pentastar

I certainly wouldn't call the V6 a dog. Infact in a lot of situations it actually surprises me. As far as driving nodes I have found that leaving Eco off, but not in sport mode is almost perfect for everything. Sport is fun, but gets annoying having the rpms high all the time. I have been driving this entire tank with Eco off and it's a very enjoyable experience. Always shifts at the right time, and I am seeing absolutely NO loss in fuel economy. The V8 has more HP, but it is not significantly different in performance to the V6 and the truck is heavier and you can feel it.
I have said this before about start/stop...I like the concept, but they really need to come up with a software update that fixes some of the goofiness. It would also drive me NUTS when I'm going to park my Jeep and it shuts off, then turns back on for whatever reason, only for me to turn it off again lol. It did this everytime I went to park. Wtf?!? As mentioned they also really need to have the feature permanently selectable on/off instead for each drive...like how they did the Eco mode starting in 2015.

I tried to drive with Eco on for the first month or so when I got it a little over a year ago, but I turned it off and it's been off ever since. I have the same thoughts as you about Sport mode. It's fun off the line but driving long term is annoying due to the high rpms. I have no complaints about the transmission and it shifts buttery smooth every time and ever since I had the TSB done to fix the 2-1 downshift bump it's really smooth.

There are situations where the engine surprises me but there are others where it just annoys me big time. Maybe mine has some funky settings or tweaks I don't know about so I'm just commenting on what I have experienced. Of course when I test drove 3 different V6 Summits they all felt like rockets.

The first part of this comment is INSANE. There is a very noticeable difference between the Pentastar and the Hemi, especially in terms of passing power...the Hemi takes off like a rocket.....for anyone to say there isn't a difference after driving both is being intellectually dishonest...

Here is a comparison between the V8 and V6. These are 2014 models but the performance should be the same on the 2016's. Only 4 mph difference between the two in the quarter mile. 1 second difference in 0-60 is that a very noticeable difference? I dunno maybe? A noticeable difference is the MPG, also the V6 does much better braking!

This will solve your lag issues and put a big smile on your face when you step on it. (Sprint Booster) Read all the reviews. Not one bad review on this product. It works!
