Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

If Jeep is the same as GM, with the order being listed as a sold order, the price is locked in as what you agreed to when you placed the order. If not a sold order all bets off.

New paint system

I know Milous posted on this and this article is from November but it has some specifics I had not heard like one of the reasons for the new system......tricolor paint options....hmmm

Chrysler limits colors for Durango and Grand Cherokee

by Bill Cawthon • Posted on November 18, 2014

Chrysler is echoing Henry Ford’s famous quote: “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.”

The only difference is that Chrysler is adding white, gray and silver to the choices.

Automotive News reporter Larry Vellequette writes that orders for new Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees will be temporarily limited to those four colors as the paint shop at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant is upgraded to allow tricolor finishes on the popular SUVs.

Even though the limitation will be in place until at least February 2015, it most likely won’t be too onerous. According to automotive paintmaker PPG, the most popular color in North America in 2014 has been white, followed by black, gray and silver – 72% of all 2014 vehicles were painted in one of those colors. Silver, once the most popular color, has fallen from favor in recent years.

Vellequette notes that just 19% of the Jeep Grand Cherokees and 8% of the Durangos on dealer lots are painted in a color other than the top four.

Of more concern to dealers is the fact the plant will shut down for three weeks from December 22 to January 12. This is the first time in several years the assembly line has been halted for such an extended period. In October, the plant produced 38,241 vehicles, up 20% from a year ago. October NAFTA region sales of the Durango and Grand Cherokee totaled 22,017 and the Grand Cherokee was the second-best-selling Chrysler Group vehicle.

So what does this new tricolor paint process bring to the table? Does it improve the appearance, add more of a pearl effect, provide a more durable finish, reduce manufacturing costs, or is it more benign to the environment?

Truly what the name implies, 3 layers of paint. Current capability is paint layer and clear layer. The way you get depth and creative with that is you mix the colors and/or flakes for variety but it is limiting and non dimensional. A tricolor system allows for a second separate middle layer between the base coat and the outer clear coat. The possibilities are endless and the paint "depth" and richness is far superior. Everything is moving quickly to a more nimble and customizable manufacturing line for all makers.

Thanks 14SummitHemi for the quick reply. I suppose it is worth the wait to order a new tricolor "Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl" than to try and pick up an existing unit off of a dealer lot.

NP, but keep in mind they have stated they will start off with white, black and granite first in Feb timeframe then "add colors". IMHO, a new real tricolor Deep Cherry Red Crystal, or its replacement won't be orderable until March " ish".

Congratulations bbotte

When we ordered our Jeep it still took 2 months before it actually got built. If you're replying to 14SummitHemi's post, ...well having a Vehicle Order Number (VON) doesn't mean that your vehicle is being built.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I understand that, the person above me stated we wouldn't be able to ORDER red until March. That clearly was not true.
