Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

For me at my age, it's just too much of a hassle. If the diesel didn't have a DEF system, and utilized a cheap, easy to replace, spin on oil filter, and didn't require such expensive, hard to get oil, I might consider it. As you say it's both powerful and economical. But the HEMI is very well proven, and you don't have to mess with all the rest.

A little background on me, I tend to drive my cars until they aren't worth fixing anymore. I am faithful about performing routine and preventative maintenance so my cars last. My current driver is a 2001 Volvo S60 with 306,000+ miles. My wife drives a 2007 Town and country with 127,000 miles. Like I said, I keep my cars a long time!

I was drawn to the diesel because I wanted the increased fuel economy and the get up and go from my test drive was really great. After reading the posts about the problems with the emissions systems (e.g. DEF, catalytic converter, etc), I chose to pass on the diesel. I know that the posts on boards like this are skewed toward the reporting of problems, but I prize reliability and dependability. I hope the problems are resolved soon as I still think the motor may entice me in the future.

I drove the V6 and while it didn't have the launch off the line that the diesel had, it was still a comfortable vehicle. Very nice!

I modeled my fuel costs to estimate the relative pro's and con's of the diesel and the V6. The advantage of the diesel in fuel economy was offset by the price difference between diesel and gas in Texas. Essentially it was a wash for me. At present fuel costs the difference is less than $100/yr.

Then someone suggested that I look at the V8. On paper the V8 is close enough to the fuel economy of the V6, that to me, the costs were close enough for me to live with. My worry was that the EPA estimates would be way off and the V8 mileage would be abysmal! financially I can handle it, but I know I would kick myself everytime I filled up if I was only getting 10 or 12 mpg's! And I looked at Fuelly.com to research mileage and a number of V8 owners are reporting mileage in the 10 to 12 mpg range with no notes about towing or other exceptional conditions.

So what to do? I took the advice of several of y'all (yes I am in Texas) and went on some test drives. The diesel was nice but at this time I'm not willing to take the chance. My 20 mile or so test drive of the V6 was pleasant and returned 21.1 mpg with a mix of highway and city driving. I then took the V8 out on the same route, and with ECO turned on I was able to get 18.3 mpg. And, I put my foot into it a few times to find out what all the fuss about the hemi was. Well, I still have a smile on my face!

The V6 was a very enjoyable and comfortable ride. The V8 was flat out fun! I would be happy with either motor but decided to have a little more fun along with the comfort and choose the V8. And my observed mileage difference was only 2.8 mpg's well within my comfort zone. Yes it was using the EVIC and yes it was only a 20 mile test route. The data squared with the EPA mpg differential and was consistent with a number of posts on Fuelly.com.

Bottom-line, this past Friday I ordered my 2015 Limited 4x4 with a V8 and the options I want. I now get to wait 6 weeks for delivery but it will have just what I want. I could have gone with the Overland but I felt that with more bells and whistles, there are more opportunities for problems. The probability is low but I want to maximize the probability that I will be able to drive my new Jeep for 200,000+ miles! And yes, I will purchase a Maxcare warranty.

I want to thank all of you for contributing to the discussion on this topic and others. This was an invaluable source of information for me and contributed to my purchasing decision.

Thanks y'all!
Best post in the entire thread! Congrats!

This is what is pushing me very hard toward the HEMI as well. For under 3 MPG difference with the V-6, why not? I'm just not seeing the economy in either the V-6 or the Eco Diesel, with it's high maintenance costs, and PITA, expensive oil changes and DEF system. The HEMI is also the most proven of the 3. Just look at all of the vehicles it's available in.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Ram trucks, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300, Dodge Durango. That translates to a lot of HEMI engines, regardless of how you look at it. If there were any high negatives with this engine, they would have surfaced by now. No question, the HEMI is the way to go!

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

I'd suggest ignoring MPG and just using dollars. How many actual dollars per year in initial cost, and operating cost for the way each person drives?

For me, and I suspect most people considering the Grand Cherokee, especially the Overland and Summit, the V8 cost difference is downright trivial, not worth more than two minutes of thought, and certainly not worth giving up the entire ownership time of nice V8 power.

Is 87 Octane Regular what is recommended in the 5.7 HEMI Grand Cherokee? Or Is it better to use Mid Grade 89 Octane? I've heard both.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

I agree with Billt in that the Hemi is a proven workhorse, used in a wide range of vehicles. I laud Jeep for innovating with the diesel and know they will solve the emissions problems soon. If they don't they will have an awful lot of Ram owners mad at them as well!

One final piece of data that went into my thinking was wondering just how much longer V8's will be "tolerated". There is a move to more economical engines which may mean the Hemi will go the way of the Dodo. I may not have many more opportunities to own a reasonably powerful vehicle. Unless of course my wife lets me buy that '63 Vette!

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

The owners manual states that 87 octane is "Acceptable" and that 89 octane is recommended. From what I've read, the 89 octane is reported to produce better mileage. I will find out for myself!

Since the owners manual recommends 89 .... that's the answer from the manufacturer. Beyond that you will get varying opinions ... and we all know what they say about opinions.

my varying opinion on that is if you are just running around the suburbs in an average climate then 87 is just fine. if you are towing 7200 lbs up a mountain in death valley definitely use the 89.
But usually only a 20 cent difference between them so just using the 89 is not much of an expense anyway

yeah that's what I say also EPA says 3 mpg combined difference car and driver tested them at 1 mpg combined difference, so somewhere between 1-3 mpg combined difference depending on how you drive just not near a substantial enough difference to consider. Enjoy your Hemi

I would only use 89 as per the recommendation in the owners manual.
To each their own.
