Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

Had the same dilemma when shopping for our JGC.

Drove all three engines and in the end went for the Hemi.

There were a number of reasons:

1) The reported V6 transmission issues with the US built ZF gearbox which is still being complained about in various threads

2) The diesel DPF issues which was causing vehicles to go into limp mode. I believe this has now been sorted with a TSB but at the time was a concern

3) To me the tried and tested V8 mated to a new gearbox such as the ZF was always going to be the one Jeep got right first time. I drove all three engines back to back and the Hemi felt the most sorted of the lot.

Smooth, effortless power and the most enjoyable to drive. I'm now six months in and don't regret picking the V8. In fact, I wish I had the extra cash at the time to buy the SRT!

Go the V8, you won't regret it!

So 91 Octane Premium is both a waste of money, and not recommended in the 5.7 HEMI?

Correct.

Mid-Grade is recommended - but not required.

91 won't cause any harm, but there is no benefit. If you got caught in a situation where they had no 89, I would probably go with 91 over 87.

87 would not cause any harm. You just won't get the power it's supposed to get.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

Impeccable logic!

I went for the Hemi too.

The Diesel didnt enter the equation for me since the cost of Diesel fuel in my area is always 50% more and I wanted to get the lifetime warranty.

We drove a V6 on test ride, it wasnt bad but I wanted the hemi to get the bigger transmission.

Plus as you mention the hemi is tried and true, minimal risk in my mind.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

I wish the manual said mid-grade instead of 91. In Denver, the octane ratings are two points lower, so mid-grade is 89 and premium is 91. Since I told my wife what the manual says 91, she won't believe me about the different ratings. According to her, I'm going to damage the engine by putting 89 in it

That's what I can't figure out. One of the reasons for going diesel is the supposed longevity of the engine itself. All you hear is how these things can go 400,000 miles without an overhaul. Then I find out they won't give you a lifetime warranty with a diesel, but they will with a HEMI? What gives?

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

Because there is a certain group of diesel owners who are hardcore enough to try to keep them for a lifetime !
But I don't really understand this because when the value of the vehicle is less than the repair you get paid out and the warranty stops even on a life time one....right?

Well according to Mopar the "lifetime" of a diesel to them is but only 8 years. That's all they'll sell you. And lets face it, that's not because they expect them to be cheap to keep on the road after that time. I would suspect the consumer demand for a 10 year old Eco Diesel would be right up there with a pair of Rosie O'Donnell's worn panties.

Amen.

My previous car with an L99 engine required nothing but premium. If I'd use anything but that there would be a loss of power and engine knocking would occur. Granted I believe when I took delivery of car dealer filled up with 87 I assume as it seemed to be a bit sluggish. That later changed until you did a fuse pull to reset the ecm back to factory and of course with 1 or 2 fill ups of premium.

I don't believe the Hemi has that logic as for the ecm but I wouldnt doubt loss of power would occur with 87.

Let's not be cheap with the hemi now. Just my 0.02

Oh and boy I'm I happy gas prices for mid range just dropped to a whopping $2.97 around my area. It was cheaper a few months back but hey it is what it is.

I've run nothing but 98 grade premium since purchase apart from the initial tank of fuel from the dealership.

Car always runs great and decent mileage as well.
