Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

I've test driven all 3 engines a few times and if I were choosing between V6 or v8 I would pick the v8. It also seemed to shift smoother and has a beefier transmission. Felt nicer to drive as you didn't have to step into it as much to get it moving.

Only downfall is a bit harder on fuel than V6. But crunch some nunbers. Check the epa ratings and calculate what the v8 may cost you to see if its a factor year over year.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

I ordered a Overland with the Hemi for the wife, we test drove a Limited with the V6.

My logic was your spending 50K for a SUV, you get a one time shot, go with the Hemi.

You get the beefier trans, cooling, tow rating, give up some gas mileage. For 2900$ I wasnt going to pass that up.

Also the Hemi is a known commodity, will easily go 250K miles with good maintenance.
V6 hasnt beem in service long enough to know.

To OP, I would get what you can find withing your budget.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

I bought a 2104 JGC with the V6 thinking of the fuel economy part...well ...I REGRET the decision to buy the V6 EVERY day I drive it.

It goes pretty well but it's nothing like the V8...aside from that I average only 16-17MPG...So i'm not really seeing the fuel savings here ...Now I'm forced to supercharge it to get power...Wish I had just bought the V8 to begin with...and then if you want more power and supercharge it you're making more horsepower than a stock SRT...

After Spending 8K to get a supercharger installed you're still no where near the power of the SRT with the V6 ...I personally will not buy anything other than an SRT for my next jeep but that's just me..

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

From my experience......

I have a 2012 Unlimited Wrangler with the V-6 Penstar and a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7. The 5.7 was a no brainer. My Wrangler with the Penstar I consider to be very underpowered considering I have it lifted with 35" tires 6-speed manual and a Superchips tuner.

The 5.7 makes driving the Cherokee a blast.

Carmax near me in socal sells new vehicles yes, but if i'm not mistaken they give nothing lower than 6% APR. So to the OP if financing is what you want to do this may be a bad idea, atleast going through carmax. Now if you're gonna pay cash, i salute you.

See you are really highlighting the same experience as that Car and Driver article that I posted above. Its not if the v6 will do better mileage of course it will but its how much better and are the small gains worth the sacrifice. Car and Driver on the 2014 GC managed 17mpg on the v6 and 16mpg on the v8 in their real world tests, sounds as you are probably doing similar? Of course the v8 will have a larger up front expense to be considered but from an real life mixed driving stand point are the actual gains worth it if you are on the fence on which one to buy? Most people do some form of mixed driving and not 100% highway or 100% city and everybody's mixed is going to yield different but its just food for thought for those that are looking to buy.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

If fuel savings is part of your purchase decision, then take a look at the fuel comparison chart according to Chrysler Canada. I'm not sure what's happening in the USA but up here car manufactures are forced to report 5 cycle fuel economy numbers which more closely matches real values. This link has all the details and charts. 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel Engine

If anyone is getting 17mpg on the V6, they need a V8 because they have a lead foot.

I NEVER see below 20mpg, ever. I've done as well 30mpg on a modest trip (summer, perfect weather, tires with 4 extra pounds and a VERY light foot doing 60 MPH).

Don't try this with a V8.

Apples to Oranges.

The Wrangler is back by a 5G-tronic Trans and the 2014-UP wk2 has a
ZF 8HP trans.

You don't think your low mpg has anything to do with you heavy wheel and tire combo? I know mine suffered why I had the Cooper's and im sure your chrome rims are not lightweight.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee - V-8 Or V-6 ??

To the OP,

I clearly misread your original post, I apologize. You should definately get the HEMI, nothing less will do. I was confused by you even asking for information on the V6 and then reading other's posts about mpg.

My brain also omitted the part about you buying this as a "last" vehicle, and thus my resale/trade in angle is moot.

I hope you enjoy your V8, I know you'll love the Jeep!
