Re: 2015 Range Rover VS Grand Cherokee (Overland/Summit)

I just saw a MotorWeek segment on the RR, and I couldn't believe it. I thought that Jeep was building GC for RR and just rebranding it. Like GM did with the Trailblazer and Isuzu or Ford Explorer and Mazda. The RR from most angles looks like a direct knockoff of the Jeep GC!

Someone, I say, someone needs to be schooled regarding the trend setters of the automotive industry. By most measures, the Grand Cherokee is modeled after the successful and sought-after features of the RR. They may both have reputable pedigrees but it is the RR that defines the luxury SUV segment.

Re: 2015 Range Rover VS Grand Cherokee (Overland/Summit)

Yeah, I cross-shopped the RR Sport as well. I know several people with RR cars and every single one of them told me it wasn't worth it. Plus, I owned a Jaguar in the past and it was an awful experience. Not that Jeep has been totally trouble free but it is a totally different level of anxiety. It really was the combo of "I'm scared to take this on a long road trip in case something happens" with "omg, is that a weird noise, how many thousands is this going to cost me?" With the GC and MaxCare warranty, I just shrug. That said, I'm still looking for something nicer than a Jeep next time because the service and quality is just unacceptable in my book. Considering Mercedes M/GLE Class (yes, you can get it outfit with fairly similar offroad capability if you desire, and the 2016 plug in hybrid 550 is fascinating) and the Porche Macan Turbo (yeah, smaller, yeah, less capable offroad, but boy would it be fun).

I've had 5 grand cherokees and have lived through the growing pains. I can't afford a RR, but must say the 2015 is beautiful. THat said, I've had a chance to drive one. My brother had one recently and it looked great, wasn't impressed after driving it for what you pay. We do a lot of bow hunting, usually easy roads, but from time to time we go down some muddy roads, fields etc. Both of us with stock factory tires, he couldn't do what my overland could do. Very unimpressed overall considering the price.

That is rather interesting considering the Summit is basically a dressed up Overland- it has all the off-road options other from tow hooks, and skid plates which does not really affect performance. Perhaps approach angle is slightly different but departure angle and ramp breakover angle are more or less the same. Generally speaking it is the fact that you are using 18" wheels as opposed to the 20" that comes standard with the Summit. Going 18" for Off-Roading does make the difference and you can certainly feel it. Changing the Summit to the same Overland Wheel set-up will keep the performance similar to your own personal finding.

Re: 2015 Range Rover VS Grand Cherokee (Overland/Summit)

The thing is you will hear horror stories from both sides, and great stories too. My parents owned a range rover about 10 or so years ago, and they had until a couple of years ago, and it never missed a beat. Went in for regular services, and never gave a problem.
My captain, currently owns a range rover sport, and has had it for just over 3 years, and also says that it has been flawless.

On the other hand, there is a guy i keep bumping into at the Jeep garage, because he is always there (literally once or twice per month!) with problems, 99% of them are electrical.
Another jeep, they had there up on the lift, getting a new front diff, as it was a gonner! Bare in mind that there's probably no more than a handful of Jeeps where i live.
Hell, mechanically my jeep has been great, but every now and then i get weird electrical glitches, but they clear themselves, so by the time I've got to the dealership its all good.

So you see there are always stories, good and bad from both manufacturers, but the short of it is, Jeep only gives a 2 year warranty, and Land Rover gives 3 years. And as prices are so close here in Europe it really is a no brainer to the RR Sport route. Also, finding a land rover dealership in Europe is pretty easy.

Over a number of years, I owned three Nissan Patrols and then bought a Landrover Discovery.

After owning it for a month, I worked out why they called it a Discovery.

It's because after you own one for a while, your Discovery is that they are a piece of shit.

Worst vehicle I ever owned.

Re: 2015 Range Rover VS Grand Cherokee (Overland/Summit)

For those people saying they would take WK2 over a supercharged RR Sport any day, you guys need to prioritize.
I am saying this purely on build quality. I previously owne a 2012 range rover sport SC, before trading it in on WK2. And Ill tell ya! Its amazing the difference in build quality, all of the buttons in the jeep cheap and plasticy, the cover of the horn feels likes made from pressed PVC pipe. The seats are thin and rattle. Everything feels cheap. I dont even have all four power windows in my 2014 wk2. The glass is thinner, and so is the paint. IT CHIPS SO EASY!

Sure I sold my RR due to having many issues with it, but 50% of those issues were caused by an insurance claim. And yes it did have gremlins, like sunvisor rattles when both opened and closed. DVD player stopped working.. YADA YADA YADA.

But if I would have known I was going to have the issues I have had with my WK2 in the first6 months I would never have traded it in.

Im not saying european cars are the best especially british. But what I am saying is your crazy for taking the jeep over a range rover. And especially crazy for taking a domestic over a german car. From what I have experienced, german vehicles are not only sound and stong but are reliable.

my two cents..

Wait, what? Do you have an Overland or Summit? You shouldn't be comparing lower trims to the RR Sport.

Right, but most Overlands w/ HEMI come with the 20" wheels like mine, although not technically standard, it's an add on and almost always on the lot w/ 20's.
