Looks like no engine upgrades, either MPG or HP, too bad. The previous post said it was possible, but I guess we should just be happy we can still get a V8 at all. I have a feeling those days are numbered.
There are big changes for the V6. The 3.6L is getting the "Pentastar Upgrade" (PUG) which adds direct injection. MPGs should increase a significant amount with that new technology. I read in the earlier refresh thread that turbo charging was not expected in the upcoming JGC, put sounds possible in the future. Also the 3.6L will now have the Start/Stop system which increased city fuel economy in the baby Cherokee 1-2 MPG in 2015. Personally, I am hoping that MPGs improve 10% to 20% overall like they have for other brands when they implemented these technologies. The CAFE standards call for certain goals by 2016, so all automakers are putting their best foot forward with regards to MPGs for MY2016.

The Start/Stop PUG seems great to me as well, but continued lack of available rear ELSD (like available with hemi and diesel) would be a deal breaker for me. I want fuel economy AND off-road capability! Diesel is intriguing of course but may be overkill for my needs.

Direct injection won't increase MPGs a 'significant amount' unfortunately.

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

So if it's not increasing power/torque, and it's not increasing mpg - what's the point? Being ready for boost in the next iteration?

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Does the "Stop/Start" mean the engine shuts off when stopped, foot on brake and vehicle in "D"? G-d I hope not. Friend's MB does that and it is quite irritating. If so maybe it can be deselected. Can't be safe or good for starter motor or battery.

My neighbor has it in a Ford. She was apprehensive, but after a year she said she never even notices it. She pulled up in front of my house one day, and while we were talking the car shut off. When she was ready to pull away she just stepped on the gas and was gone.

As for the battery and starter, I'll bet at least one engineer thought about that, without consulting the the car forums.

What is so irritating about the Mercedes iteration?

Nothing other than the fact you both hear it start and feel the slight hesitation.

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Now, what about these features? They are not listed as 'New' for MY16 (not anymore) - BUT....are still listed as 'new features' for the refresh itself:

Electronic parking brake (EPB) with Safe Hold Console-lever electronic parking brake supplants conventional pull-handle/push-pedal system; can be activated while driving (pull up switch and hold); can be released automatically by engaging forward or reverse gears with driver buckled in and door closed; also features Safe Hold, which stops the vehicle using the motor on caliper (MOC) at each rear wheel if driver unlatches seat belt and opens door without placing vehicle in park.

and

LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus Alerts and assists driver with corrective action; leverages electronic power steering (EPS) to deliver subtle steering-wheel input when system detects need for course correction

and

ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist Ultrasonic parking sensors on bumper guide driver into parking space. The system automatically controls steering-wheel angle, driver controls, gear position, brake, and accelerator. Parallel parking possible on either side of vehicle; for perpendicular parking, vehicle backs itself into space.

Were these features all planned and then simply skipped?

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I wouldn't worry about the battery.

The batteries will be fine.
