Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

The shifter in this new photo is better than the one in the earlier photo - less baggy and stitching blends in, would have preferred no stitching on the actual handle/knob itself though.

2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Okay, so let's take what Marlon said as a possible hint. That might make sense -- I believe FCA has always had the plan of doing the 8HP70 in-house as well as the 8HP45 (which became the 845RFE) as a licensed version.

Here's the thing. FCA is spread pretty thin. I do work in the industry (telematics) and deal with them semi-regularly, and this is always the impression. I would not want a vehicle with their brand new licensed 8HP70 version -- definitely not at first. The 845RFE STILL has notable shift quality issues (not as bad as at first, but...not quite right yet either).

The 8HP70 behind the diesel and the Hemi is MUCH better...but, it still isn't on par with the shift quality you get from that SAME transmission as used by other manufacturers (BMW, etc), mostly because FCA hasn't been able to keep up with and put enough resources into getting the programming perfected yet. Build a licensed version of the 8HP70 as their own and add that new programming (and hardware) to the mix and...well, you see where that could be going...

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

My understanding from his comment is that they no longer need to buy the shifter from ZF since they will have their own patented one.

Nope, they're still buying them from ZF.

The 8HP70 will be phased out in a couple years, replaced by the new 2nd gen 8HP75.

I have long thought this as well. I wish FCA would farm out the programming to someone else to get it right. Other wise we are just their test subjects in the meantime. Meanwhile during my last visit to the dealer they did add the latest software which has almost got it right.

3 years in January they have been putting the 845RE in the GC and they almost got it right? Yeah id say it's about time to call in some help and fire whoever they have left in charge of that for the last 3 years. Ridiculous to still be reading about shift issues on that trans.

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Is anyone sure that the programing is done totally in house? I can't believe that if the tranny design is licensed from ZF that they aren't involved in the software.

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

The MY2014 Porsche Cayenne I bought used last month has the ZF 8 speed in it . It is spot on. The shifts are smooth.
I got tired of the hearing about all the different issues with the GC. I may give the MY17 GC a go if FCA can gets their quality ,reliability, and dependability up .
Believe me I'm aware that this Cayenne could be a hand full as well.
I drove a used MY 15 Summit diesel that was on the lot . Very nice vehicle, they just would not deal on the price.

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

^^Thats pretty much how buying a GC works. They don't budge a whole lot on this mass produced vehicle that is probably going to have several issues. It's the Jeep experience

Re: 2016 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I will say this. The WK2 has a lot of content for the money. I don't need the Jeep experience from the Dealer. I'd like to get that from a great vehicle.
