Re: 2016 Owners...how's the stop and start working?

Years ago we started sending "field service technicians" out to "repair" locomotives with instructions called "FSM's" (field service modifications). We were often accused of "engineering" in the field. The problem is that with very complicated systems such as locomotives, autos, and many other technological devices, you don't really know how things will act in the real world until they get out into the real world. Anything with coded software often is released as beta test versions. So the beta testers are often just customers who are willing to take a chance, and report back problems. Admittedly, that's much less of a problem with a software program than with an expensive vehicle. But the real world test is where the problems are found by the beta tester, or as we used to call them, guinea pigs.

Re: 2016 Owners...how's the stop and start working?

I don't have an issue with my KL and S/S. Initially I turned it off at each driving cycle but then after a few months I thought I really should give it a fair go and now, I never turn it off (16 months of ownership).

As an aside, I did have a convo with the dealership in the early days and they said they can disable it permanently if I chose. I never followed that up in detail but the KL is due for a service in a few weeks, so while I am there I will re-investigate the possibility of this again and if so, it could make a few folk on here happier.

That is assuming of course that the system on the '16 WK is the same as the KL. I'll keep you posted with what I find out.

yeah... if it's doing that, you may want to take it to the dealer. that's not how this feature works.

The only way they'll fix it is if enough people complain. So I plan on being a real pain in the ass until they do.

Re: 2016 Owners...how's the stop and start working?

I just think the whole stop/start feature is beyond rediculous! I am soooo glad my Overland doesn't have it! Do you really think it's saving you money at the pump? NOT! What the hell were the engineers thinking besides trying to make the Jeep appear more fuel efficient? What a load of horse sh*t! And with 13+ pages on this thread I am clearly not alone . . .

Re: 2016 Owners...how's the stop and start working?

Keep in mind that stopping your vehicle's motor is not just about saving gas, it is also about reducing emissions into the atmosphere. Many countries (Germany is one) have laws that require you to turn off your motor if idling for a certain period of time. Start/Stop features make this automatic and if every vehicle did this, I would bet that it would make a big difference in the amount of crap we spit out into this world.

Personally, I like the S/S feature on my 2017 Overland whether is saves me gas or not.

Edit: Some test have shown the S/S feature works: https://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/...save-fuel.html

Re: 2016 Owners...how's the stop and start working?

Interesting discussion.

I always thought the concept was designed more to help with governmental regulations on emissions based on my understanding that starting a car spends more gas than letting it idle up to a minute but it looks like recent studies are showing fuel savings, too.

If that is true, then I have another concern - with recent studies supposedly showing that it saves money to shut off your car, even if you are idling for as little as 10 seconds, why is my new 2017 jeep with start stop not getting better gas mileage than the in-line 6 I have in my 1999 Laredo that consistently gets 20-22 MPG? I will continue to track (by hand) the fuel efficiency in our new V6 and perhaps it will increase.

It is common for brand new engines to get less mpg until the break in. I have seen much larger numbers for mpg on all of my new engines (motorcycles too) after they break in. My new 2017 Overland is only getting ~16 MPG combined (mostly city) but I expect it to easily jump to 18+ later. We will see.
