Years ago we started sending "field service technicians" out to "repair" locomotives with instructions called "FSM's" (field service modifications). We were often accused of "engineering" in the field. The problem is that with very complicated systems such as locomotives, autos, and many other technological devices, you don't really know how things will act in the real world until they get out into the real world. Anything with coded software often is released as beta test versions. So the beta testers are often just customers who are willing to take a chance, and report back problems. Admittedly, that's much less of a problem with a software program than with an expensive vehicle. But the real world test is where the problems are found by the beta tester, or as we used to call them, guinea pigs.
