I couldn't get back into my Jeep quick enough. I honestly still don't see what all the hype is about CarPlay anyway.
I have CarPlay in my '16 Escalade. I don't understand what the hype is all about, I cannot tell you the last time I used it. I see absolutely no benefit in having it.

Interesting! I finally got tired of holding out for it myself and ordered a 17 Summit. Curious what your thoughts were when you did use it. Did you feel it was 100% overhyped or some things were more useful/intuitive than the stock setup?

Let me ask it this way: How does the quality of the most current Uconnect NAV compare to Google Maps? And how will that comparison evolve over the next three or so years? How about over the ten years that I expect to own the vehicle?

I ordered a 17 Trailhawk last week. I am a current iPhone user but getting ready to upgrade and considering an Android device. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aside, can anyone provide info as to whether one smartphone platform is more usable with UConnect than the other?

Generally speaking...and this applies to pretty much almost all factory NAV systems in vehicles...they are not as dynamic over time as a cloud-fed application like Google Maps or Apple Maps or Wayz, etc. Nature of the beast. But they are also bundled with the higher-end systems so whether you use them long term (and pay to update the maps every couple of years) is a personal decision. The current generations of CarPlay and the Android equivalent don't really fully address that because of app support limitations. Ideally, we will someday be able to just mirror whatever our personal app choice is to a larger screen in the vehicle for navigation without having to plug in a cable or do anything else more complicated than, perhaps, bring up the app on the portable device. That level of ease and integration just isn't there yet and NAV is a cash cow for the auto industry.

For the record, I've pretty much stopped using my 730N's NAV feature for most NAV situations in favor of Google Maps (or Apple Maps if that comes up as default in a situation) via Bluetooth. I still have the 730N map active on the larger screen, but my iPhone is in a mount that makes it easy to see if I need to check a detail that's not appearing on the vehicle map. I doubt I'll buy any more map updates for the 730N at this point.

I guess I do not pay that close attention to the mapping features. The nav in the cadillac is nothing special, but it gets it done. The Onstar feature that allows you to send an address to the navigation remotely is another reason I would not use Carplay as I find that feature convenient and not compatible with the google.
When you plug your phone in to activate Carplay, the actual album art shows up on the screen. After about 2.5 seconds it gets old. That is honestly the only thing that sticks in my head as a feature.
I can also tell you that I have a 100 artist Pandora favorites list. It seems to be an issue with Carplay that the whole library selection will not display on the vehicle screen. It will only display about the first 20, the rest need to be accessed via the phone screen. In other words, I don't think you are missing anything!

Thanks for posting. So is it correct to assume the main advantage people want from CarPlay is the Apple nav options? Would I be missing out on anything else?

How does the current system integrate with an IPhone for calls, etc? Any issues?

I have quickly grown to love the way Google Maps routes me around traffic delays.

I would assume so.
The Cadillac has voice recog, text reading etc already in the factory system, so there might be some redundancy with the apple product. I also have Sirius traffic integrated into the factory nav, so rerouting, again is redundant.
One downside we discovered is the fact that the Carplay overrides bluetooth in my car. In other words, if I am wirelessly steaming Pandora from my phone and my wife decides to charge her phone in a usb port, her phone automatically activates Carplay and becomes the dominant device in the car, overriding my streaming. That is another "feature" that blows.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

JUST felt I wanted to add my dimes worth ( 2 cents just doesn't go as far as it used to!). Not in the market for a '17, now that I have and love my 2 month old Laredo 75th (without Nav., not an option!). BUT, the topic is of interest and as many seem to be aware (the Carplay folks anyway) that the iTunes App Store offers a number of very good Nav. and On or Off-road mapping Apps for your iPhone or iPad. I don't have a super smart phone of either Android or Apple; just a simpler data free flip-phone (you know like Jethro Gibbs !).
SOON I will be buying a very useful (to me) iPad w/wifi & cellular so that when I make my iTunes App decision (for mapping mainly off-road use) I will have the Diversity of use choices, such as "take it out of the G.C. and start Hiking," or . . . . . ?
I certainly can understand the frustration for some, I had some "issues" about MY G.C. purchase that kinda "pissed me off for awhile too! The iPad will offer me more Options that can be updated or changed anytime and the freedom to take it with me - in or out of the vehicle. Good luck to all with whatever decision you make!

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

So what does carplay do that my current '15 Overland cant?

I use bluetooth for music and phone, the vehicle has Nav in it, and the update recently brought Siri support to it (although that could use some polishing).

Does carplay simply do these same things in a different manner?

2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Thanks for the firsthand info Tyresmoker!👍

Sounds like it would be more useful with a base stereo then the full top of line stereo that is in the higher GC models. I have the traffic reroute on mine too, so that feature would be redundant. Think I would like the easier Apple Music integration, but I can just Bluetooth anyway to hear that stuff. Thanks again - confirmed that it wasn't worth waiting for it and face a potential price increase down the road!
