For me the appeal would be android auto and the waze app. I am a big fan of waze and it seems to me the quintessential use case.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I'm new to the site and hoped to get info on ordering a 2017 GC CRD but it seems that there must be some type of hangup since no one seems to be able to actually place an order. Should I just forget it for now and wait until the Jeep.com site is updated with 2017 build and price info ? Thanks for any help.

There are a lot of pages in this thread. So, best I can tell is that it is delayed while waiting for the updated transmission. I've been told it might be another month but I'm not sure if that's accurate or if anyone really knows.

Post 1 of this thread is kept pretty up to date.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I'm a newb here, but have watch the progress on the 2017 GC, particularly around an update to uconnect to include android auto. I've tested a car with the system(Cadillac XT5) and it became very apparent to me that this was a must have feature if you care at all about phone integration. the secret sauce is that android auto leverages all the information on your phone that you've accumulated over time. for instance, it grabs all my playlists and podcasts from Google music and makes them incredibly easy to navigate from the head unit. In fact, it's easier to navigate than on the phone itself. Another example, it leverages your appointments and learned schedule to predict where you'll likely be going next. So if you have an appointment with an address in it on your phone and you hop in the car to leave, the system automatically pops up that destination on the screen, telling you how long it will take to get there and giving you the option to navigate there. On top of all this, android auto Lays out the different functions in a card format. So on the same screen is a simple music controller on one card, with a shortcut to nav right next to it that also previews your next turn. The system also has a very slick integration with Google messenger or hangouts and will let you dictate a reply using voice. The biggest upside is that it will only get better as more apps are added and optimized for the road. I also appreciate Google's tight controls on format for the platform. It keeps it simple and safe.

Well, I guess I am showing my age (48)...that info means nothing to me! I use my car to go to and from the office, and find that most people usually tell me where to go !

I can understand that. I have a 2000 M roadster with a barely functioning radio that's all about point A to B without distraction. But our next SUV serves a different purpose for the wife and I.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I am most definitely waiting for CarPlay before upgrading form my 2012 GC. My wife has a 2015 Challenger with the Siri Eyes Free Update, but there are still quite a few annoyances...

Keep in mind that I am a software developer and like shiny new software, so I am biased.

<start rant>

My biggest annoyance EVER with the the UConnect in the Challenger is that no matter what, plugging the phone in to charge forces the phone to start playing the 1st song (as sorted alphabetical in your Library). This sucks. Period. So many times, I was listening to a song in the car, got out to go in somewhere and upon coming back to the car, it resets back to the first song, grrr. It doesn't appear to matter if it is over Bluetooth or USB, it happens -- nearly all the time. MY 2012 GC (430N) does the same thing and it drives me nuts. This is not an iOS bug as it NEVER happens when using an external Bluetooth speaker or my Bluetooth Headphones...this is squarely a UConnect issue.

Another annoyance of UConnect is it insists on playing audio (even silent audio from apps) when it can. We'll be driving down listening to Sirius and then if I open up Twitter/Facebook (both apps actually play silent audio as a way to do better multitasking), then the car switches over to Bluetooth and plays the silence. Why??? If I wanted to listen over Bluetooth, I would have changed the input...don't assume that I want to change.

Lastly, the UConnect texting/notifications/voice commands are absolute garbage. The new text notification is vert obtrusive. I just want to see a preview on the screen (CarPlay style) and then tap on it if I want to hear it or respond. The voice recognition on my wife's Challenger is awful...It never gets the correct contact to call. It is significantly better on the old 430N in my Jeep and the new systems appear to be a big step backwards in voice recognition. Siri/Google Now would blow it out of the water.

My biggest fear is that FCA will do something stupid that will make CarPlay/Android Auto suck. They have a very poor implementation of Siri Eyes Free and it *barely* works. Other cars that I've been in that had it made it work significantly better. It seems like it was just hacked in on the Challenger. It frequently hangs after giving a command, etc.

So yea, the UConnect may be the best OEM car system out there, but that isn't saying much considering how bad the others are. Maybe thats why the other manufacturers are pushing hard to get CarPlay/Android Auto into new cars ASAP.

</end rant>

As a side note, do the new GCs only have 1 USB port? The Challenger only has 1. My Jeep has 2 (1 on the dash and 1 in the armrest). It is nice that both my wife and I can charge our phones at the same time. Is the only way to do that in the new Jeeps to buy a dedicated car charger?

2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

The playing of the 1st song on your phone definitely super super annoyong!!! with the latest update. never use to do that until the latest ugly update with siri. I'm sure it will get fixed come next update.

I've tried a car with carplay and it's not refined/integrated enough yet to really make it a show stopper for me at all. that plus most cars still require a wire to make it work with your phone. I find it more distracting more than anything.

I'd really like some basic features refined, like when you press the NAV button it goes to Map right away or at least stay where you left off.

Regardless, the uConnect is light years ahead of Mercedes ML/GLE which is the closest competitive platform. Tried them also and it's like a hair short of hopeless if radio/console means anything to you.

The "first song" playing thing isn't unique to the UConnect system. My spouse struggles with the same issue with the Subaru-provided system.
