Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I apologize about not digging through this whole thread on CarPlay.

I know it was initially listed and then apparently removed and I did search back a ways and gave up trying to find the transition point (a week or so ago).

But is it still looking like one of FCA's top selling and Premier Jeep is still not going to have CarPlay in 2017 MY. When so many other Vehicles will in their fleet? And they have the new radio. Why on earth would they not put it in?

I am so bummed if this remains this way.

The entertainment systems are such a more critical part of vehicles today and a nice car with a dated system really devalues a vehicle a LOT today. Way more than in the past. And it's not like you can easily drop in 3rd party systems like you could in the past.

I really wanted to get a 2017 and just can't justify it without this update. It's not that it's BAD today. But it will look VERY OLD in just a year or two. And the current radio going in is really not much different than what I had in my 2014.

UConnect is great system, but it needs this 4th Gen update in MY 2017.

Even if it was a later firmware update to support carplay, put the hardware in please.

Or if all else fails update it during the model year and give an estimated date so we can hold our orders until then

FCA can't seriously be thinking of selling this in 2018 without CarPlay/Android-Whatever-its-called.

I'd PAY EXTRA for the option. I really want to upgrade to a summit. But I'm holding off until CarPlay is there.

Wow I cant believe carplay is such a critical thing to people to where they literally will not consider the car because of that. I'm into the latest and greatest things, but I dunno I guess I don't see it as being a big deal. Whats even so great about it?

CarPlay - Apple

Resale Value

4th Generation UConnect, LTS Cellular. Probably gonna be more memory and faster CPU too.
Might even pay for the service because it might even be usable. With the 3G speeds now most all the features are completely useless. Takes like 8 minutes to start the car, if it starts at all.

future features or apps that may come along by a system that meets "CarPlay" specs.

Consistency with how the iPhone works and the car works.

You will get the same features that UConnect offers now that you have to pay monthly for now, but will be automatically included with CarPlay. Two Way Voice Text, Tethered Apps like Pandora etc.

When I set up my nav in the house or work, I just drop the phone in and it's there. Don't need to maintain two lists of favorite destinations.

Will get traffic while Nav for free. I tend to never use the Nav in the Jeep because it does not have traffic close to what the phone has. Even with the crappy XM service.

All the features I tend to use on the phone instead of the car will be tightly integrated into the car. Easier to use and see. I won't even need to take my phone out of my pocket and mount it. Which I always do now.

Always up to date nav maps.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Eh, I wouldn't mind Android Auto, but the only thing I'd get out of it is tighter integration with Google Music...but I stream that through my phone anyway on my 2016, so it's no major loss. I'm one of the ones that would prefer to have Nav built into the head unit instead of running through my phone, as I've been in places where I didn't have a phone signal and lost my Nav on the phone. I know you can download maps...but eh, I have to remember to do it beforehand.

Other than that...what apps really matter on your head unit? What are you going to be doing while driving that you need apps for, that the current uconnect can't already do?

Its not just car play. Its the 4th gen uconnect unit. Higher resolution, capacitive (responds better to touch basically), likely faster processor, ect.

I'm sort of in this camp as well. I love tech, and I'm sure a more robust 4th generation head unit would be great to have. I suspect this will make an appearance in the MY 2017's even if CarPlay doesn't.

However, at the end of the day, everything I want to do in my 2016 JGC I can do now. I can send (via Siri) and receive text messages, I can stream iHeart and Pandora without problems, my phone works flawlessly, and the nav unit works great along with POI and other enhancements. I have a loaded 16 Gig SD card that plays well through my HK system. I get the fact some of this needs uConnect, but there just isn't any other feature I would want. I don't need any more distractions than I already have.

What matters most to me is what the head unit is attached to. Right now I have about 1400 miles into my Jeep and it is an absolute pleasure to drive. I'm even getting used to start stop. I just don't think there is another vehicle in this price range that can deliver the level of comfort and performace/sophistication and features that I have in my Overland.

If that is the case I'd be less concerned. I want the next gen head unit. The 2015 struggles a bit with what I have.

I think Nav integration would be one of the best features of CarPlay and I expect it would still function without the phone. Not all customers will have a "smart phone".

It's like buying a 3 year old smartphone that you want to keep for say 3 years. It's crazy.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

The 2016 unit seems to work great for me and does all I want. I looked at features for CarPlay and was (for a few moments) considering waiting. CarPlay is still a very immature tech and just does not seem to be all the hype claims. Some things to consider:

It's tethered. The speed needed to use it is still not there with Bluetooth.

When tethered and using CarPlay most applications on your phone are locked out... No Waze! That was the deal killer.

Music would be good but on my 2016 the SD card with Siri Eyesfree works great so why bother... I use SD rather than stream from phone since its still not Bluetooth aptX and the quality difference is noticeably better from the SD.

I'd rather have just leave my phone untethered and use Bluetooth for hands free phone and texts which work just fine the way it is.

All-in-all I would rather not have CarPlay. I am a total Apple user and there are many improvements to Uconnect that are needed but... CarPlay is still not ready for prime time even if other manufacturers put it in.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

But Carplay and Android Auto will evolve and get better. Imagine what they might be like ten years from now (when I plan to still be driving this Jeep).

Your Uconnect will never be any better than the day you roll it off the lot.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Does it occur to anyone else that the reason ford and gm and others are pushing car play is because their systems are not as well thought out or work as well as uConnect?
