I prefer to use the cable as I want my phone always charging when I am in the car. In addition to that using the cable just gives you more options and features that Bluetooth just can't offer.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! That is a big purpose of Android Auto - to make the far superior maps and live traffic available on the much bigger display. It is annoying to have to use my 5" phone display for nav when I have a much larger display. Without android auto, that is exactly what I will be doing even if my Jeep has Nav (which it probably will) because of the poor mapping data and much more difficult use of uconnect interface for nav.

If you've never used a Smartphone Navigation system, then you're missing out. Google Maps updated traffic conditions, weather, and road work in real time. And there is no additional charge or fee.

And online Navigation system like Google are FAR more updated then what is in our WK2s. They've built & opened 2 new roads in my area & Google Maps knows & routes accordingly, while the Nav in my WK2 does have a clue.

But how is CarPlay in areas with weak cell coverage vs. always available in car no cost satellite based navi?

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

jeepgrady - I have used both my built in nav and nav maps on my 6s+ which is a decent sized screen. The map nav on the iPhone is superior. I understand carplay uses the nav screen so that is a non-issue.

jlaskin - It downloads stuff from the get go. You'd have to be way out of cell coverage for a long time for it to have any real noticeable effect. Just like nav pre-downloads things etc. so even if not in range of GPS satellites it still knows where you are on the map.

So basically if I read all these comments correctly is that you would have to be a fool to pay extra and order a car companies / dealership nav system.

Think that is the reason for resistance with certain manufacturers. No upsell to nav with CarPlay or android auto.

Re: 2017 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

there will/should come a time soon where your phone "appliance" (really the size of a mini-tablet by then) will dock in your vehicle kinda like where the UI screen is now.

Don't think you'll have to "dock" anything. They will just have a screen in the self-driving shared vehicle with electronics that wireless connect to your smartphone and immediately adjust everything to your preferences as if it were your vehicle. I think the future will be larger screens in vehicles that simply wouldn't be portable to carry around.

Already here. Think self customization where we wouldn't necessarily own a car, rather we would acquire a car for our needs. I need a truck this weekend. How about a full size SUV for the family vacation. A sporty car for the date night.

Plug in your device (profile) and off you go.
