2017 Summit seats

I just took delivery of a 2017 Summit and the vehicle is well-engineered and well-made but in the process of designing it driver comfort has been sacrificed in a big way. Compared to my 2012 Overland Summit the driver's compartment is more cramped and the seats are smaller and hard.

The day I got it I drove it for two and a half hours and my backside was literally made numb.

There are a couple of sport settings and the users manual talks about other thing you can set to make for a "dynamic driving experience". An SUV is not a sports car and it seems to me that they're trying to market the Grand Cherokee to a generation that mostly can't afford it. How many Millennials can afford a $50K vehicle?

Re: 2017 Summit seats

So your 2 complaints are the seats, and that maybe people you don't know can't afford what you have?

You can get a well equipped Grand Cherokee for a lot less than 50.

You would be surprised, nowadays "afford" seems to mean your credit cards are all maxed out, you live pay check to pay check and the collections agencies only call once a month and you can keep them at bay so you are fine and buy a new 50k car every year when they come out.

Sorry but anyone stupid enough to not properly test a vehicle they spend $40,000+ on deserves what they get!

The interior of the MY17 is pretty much identical in size to the MY12. It's the same vehicle in that respect. That will not change until the platform changes for MY19.

The seats are also the same size, but they may be cushioned differently which would affect how they feel.

But, if you have a big butt, after 5 years the bolsters may have flattened out and the springs could have lost some of their firmness. So although they started out the same, they could seem to be totally different.

Jeep could maybe sell padded boxer shorts in the Jeep accessory catalog.

Re: 2017 Summit seats

The 2017 has an 8-speed transmission whereas the 2012 had a 5-speed. The transmission hump seems larger to me resulting in less interior room.

I own a 2012 and have driven multiple MY14+. I didn't notice any difference in space, but did notice more refined performance from the newer transmission.

Re: 2017 Summit seats

We just traded our '13 Cadillac SRX for a '17 Summit yesterday and the ride comfort and seats are much better than how our Cadi felt. I wouldn't call it cramped but I expected the jeep to be less roomy, from jeeps we've owned in the past. Turned out for us there is more space than our SRX had, and we definitely wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't comfortable on the test drive.

Re: 2017 Summit seats

The seats aren't even close to as cushy and comfy as the ones in my 2004 Overland, but those were 12 years old, so they probably got a bit softer over time.

Honestly dude, the Jeep is pretty boring to drive when not in sport mode. That's the only saving grace keeping me from trading it in. And I'm 30 (apparently a milennial...), sorry to hurt your feelings that my wife and I have great paying jobs and can afford a Summit like you Maybe you should have bought a Lincoln or Buick SUV instead?

Re: 2017 Summit seats

I have not driven a 2017, but somethibg tells me it's mostly in your head. Everything should be pretty much the same. Same seats they have been using since 2011 with nothing more than changes in materials used. The floor pan is probably close to identical. All newer Grand Cherokee seats are relatively firm, but I personally have no complaints. It's very comfortable!
I say give it time. Any new car is going to feel unusual until you get used to it. Almost like a shoe. You know it's better than the old ones, but it still doesn't feel right....it will. The seats aren't smaller, the interior sizes didn't change...you'll get used to it.

And to the OP...I gotta ask, what the heck does selectable driving modes and cool tech stuff like that have anything to do with appealing to only people that can't afford the car? All high end cars have that kind of technology these days and it's very welcomed technology. Why would you not want to be able to select different driving modes that appeal more to you or make for a more enjoyable driving experience? I dunno, after reading your post again, sounds like you may have just made a 50k mistake.

I'm going on 5 years of owning my 2012 limited.

No issues with the seats until a road trip from Toronto to Florida. Found the seats too hard on a long trip.

Now they bother me all the time(in my head).

I agree nothing much has changed since 2011 but the 2014 refreshed interior somehow feels more cramped/less roomier then 2011-2013.

In a good way .
