Well...that strategy is how we ended up with the current Ford Explorer (which sucks as an SUV, it's nothing more than a Wagon version of the Taurus).

So, now FCA looks at the Giorgio platform (a car platform, like the Taurus platform is) & says let's base the next Jeep Grand Cherokee on it.

Can you say Taurus/Explorer "Redux" with a Jeep badge by the Italians???

So much for the JGC being an off-roader...they're just going to turn it into another Road Yacht (Mall Crawler)... which is all the current Explorer is.

Of course, we already knew the Italians don't have any experience engineering off-road vehicles...that was a given. Makes you wonder about the new Wrangler coming soon.

Hmm...Ford just saw the need for a new mid-size off-road offering emerging in the segment recently...and guess what was announced today...they're bringing back the Bronco in 2020 as a true Off-Road SUV (based on new Mid-size Ranger platform)!!!

Guess where the Jeep fans are gonna go, if FCA softens up the new JGC too much & they want something more "off-road" worthy, but an alternative to the 4-Runner??

Yup!!...BRONCO (provided Ford does it justice, of course).

...Time will tell!

I do share your frustration but I would like to point out that the Grand Cherokee is the original cross-over and was never built on a truck platform. As for a shared platform, the current Cherokee, bastardized and ugly as it is, shares the platform with the Chrysler 200. Yet everyone agrees that the Cherokee Trailhawk can handle it off-road...

I think that might be Toyota's strategy/justification for keeping the 4Runner BOF w/a solid rear axle. Other than the Wrangler, which is admittedly a different class, what else is currently out there in the midsize SUV market? Even today's Grand Cherokee is IRS and unibody (or uniframe if you talk Jeep marketing lingo). Personally, it doesn't matter to me because I see the Grand Cherokee as a middle ground vehicle that provides decent capability with good driving dynamics and comfort. The 4Runner might have an edge with it's BOF and solid rear axle, but it's driving dynamics are horrible on the road, where we all spend 99% or more of our time.

Here is some intel. My brother-in-law is an executive at Ford and was visiting with my sister during the holidays. He told me that the new Bronco is going to look like the old Bronco (it has already been through the design phase), but "on steroids" (his words), and it will truly be off-road worthy - going so far as to say that it will come with a winch and have a ton of torque. He said Ford is very serious making the Bronco a true Wrangler fighter, with the advantage of being much more livable as a DD. Remember where you heard these words.

Is that a good thing??? Is this what people were hoping for???

Do we know for sure that that platform is for the GC?

Sorry dan...we know nothing more than what's posted. Maybe we can get a thread started on the Giorgio platform and explore it as a group?

My cousin's boyfriend's uncle's next-door neighbor is a Chrysler Executive and he says that the next generation Grand Cherokee will have solid axles front and rear, a fully boxed ladder frame, and come standard with 35" mud tires and front & rear lockers. It is going to be awesome!!

I appreciate the humor, but I have no reason to lie here. I've been on this forum since 2013 when I purchased an early-build 2014 Overland. You seem to have joined in Oct, 2016, meaning I've been here over 3 years longer than you. I have been bugging my B-I-L for months to give me some info re the Bronco, as he has designed transmissions for Ford for many years and is now at the executive level. What I said in my previous post is what he told me over the holiday. If you don't believe me, that's fine. I wouldn't have even posted about what my B-I-L told me if it wasn't for the content of this thread leading someone to mention the Bronco.

Yeah ... and it will have flux capacitor as an option.
