Re: 3.6L V6 owners: rate your 5-speed transmission please!

I rated it a 4 out of 5 because it is way better than the transmission in my wife's GMC Acadia and makes the JGC much more fun to drive. The Acadia's programming provides little power until the gas pedal is floored then it roughly downshifts.

Re: 3.6L V6 owners: rate your 5-speed transmission please!

I gave it a 3/5. In some cases it works fine, such as when accelerating from a stop and you can go at your own pace and with the right throttle it rows smoothly through the gears. But when you have to deal with traffic and move at their pace which is usually not a smooth rate of acceleration it just wants to upshift and the engine falls flat on it's face. Then you have to apply more throttle, especially if you're going uphill, and it may downshift then take off like a bat out of hell in which case you have to slow again and the whole sries of events repeats itself. The transmission itself isn't so bad but the programming is horrible!

Re: 3.6L V6 owners: rate your 5-speed transmission please!

I'm wondering if some of the complaints here are from the speed control, which is not great. I've always owned Fords until now and they are good at holding a steady speed. When transitioning to an uphill grade my '07 Expedition would slow down maybe 1 mph and then very slowly get back to set speed while climbing. That is typical with all the Fords that I have owned.

With this Jeep it will slow down 2-3 mph and then try to catch up, exceeding the set speed by 2-3 mph.

Que-up the Hemi guys to say that my Jeep has no power and that's the problem but the power/ weight ratio is higher than the Fords I have owned. And no its not torque either because the torque curve on the Pentastar is table-flat.

The best vehicle I've driven with regards to speed control was a big Lexus SUV. That thing wouldn't even downshift to make most steep grades. But man did it drink heavily.

Re: 3.6L V6 owners: rate your 5-speed transmission please!

For me the issues didnt have anything to do with speed control. Infact I was overall very happy using the adaptive cruise control on a regular basis on my 12 Overland V6. For me it was 100% all shift points. Infact if I shifted manually at points where most cars would shift the Jeep was an absolute blast to drive (even with the little V6). I always thought to myself why couldnt this thing just shift like I want it and I would be thrilled with it. Like I said before that engine and tranny combo COULD be great, but the engineers tuned it to be a flat out lame. What would drive me nuts the most is when accelerating up a slight incline, it would shift into 2nd or 3rd wayyyyy too early to the point where I had to push the pedal down relatively far just to get the damn thing out of 1100rpm and out of the way of cars behind me. I may sound a bit over dramatic, but its the truth IMO. I now drive my 07 Acura TL Type S and its a blast. The tranny puts it at exactly the right gear all the time. I cant wait to try out the new 8spd and see how it drives. If it excites me I may find myself back in a Grand Cherokee someday :-)

Re: 3.6L V6 owners: rate your 5-speed transmission please!

I rate it at 4+, only because that 2-3 shift comes to early sometimes if I forget to step down a little harder. The use of Sport mode will prevent that. The ACC works seamlessly with the tranny for me under all driving conditions.
