3 month new car curse

I am cursed with brand new cars!! I can't seem to make it past the 3 month mark without the things sustaining some kind of damage

I was driving into town over the weekend on an 80km/h stretch of highway when a piece of carpet came flying out from under the car in front of me and straight into the front of my brand new, 2 1/2 month old Grand Cherokee. Scratched the hell out of the front where it hit. I'm absolutely bummed, angry and everything else in between. I have been dreaming of owning a GC for the past 4 years and I finally get one and my curse strikes again!
I say curse because my previous car, a 2011 Patriot I bought brand new, I hit a Kangaroo in it in the first 3 months of owning it. Never sustained another injury in the 4 years I owned it.
Hubby thinks I'm nuts getting so worked up about it, but he drives a Holden, he wouldn't understand

Anyone else have this kind of bad luck with new cars or is it just me? ...sighs...

Worse luck.
Brand new MG, parked and eating lunch on way home. First day, some dipstick redesigned the driver door.

Decade later, brand new Datsun on the way home. Commented to passenger on how long it would take some idiot to put a ding on it. Very next light, kabang, "enter the idiot"

Sadly both incidents were in states that frown on open carry of firearms.

So you'd kill a person for accidentally hitting your car?

It's not bad luck its good luck! You got the first scratches out of the way early. It's a Jeep, you're supposed to have wounds on it. Just tell everyone it happened while off roading it in the outback, they'll be totally impressed, leave that part about the carpet out of the story though.

Re: 3 month new car curse

For me it seems like every new vehicle I have owned (and I owned a lot) all seem to get windshield damage when its new. My Grand Cherokee was no exception, a big rock chip just below the drivers field of view 2 hours after picking up the vehicle.

I ran over a goose a month ago at 80km/h, straight to the middle of the lower front bumper. I thought there would be damage but nothing except blood and feathers. The Jeeps are tougher than they look...

No, just for making a stupid comment about it... sadly, that too is frowned on.
Oh well.

At least some of us here knew what you meant. Its frustrating, but you actually wouldn't do it, we know. It wasn't 6 months after buying ours before I noticed someone had side-swiped the passenger side of the front bumper in a parking lot. No dents in the plastic, but several really good deep scratches. Some people just have no depth perception.

About 1 year into ownership, the driver's side of the front bumper also took a glancing hit. Again while we had it in a parking lot and were not in it. This time it wasn't as bad/deep, but they decided to go a bit longer: scratched the black wheel well trim a bit as well.

That's a real bummer, sorry to hear about the vicious, unprovoked carpet attack on your JGC! First the iPod issues and now this. Here's to hoping the next many thousand km are far more enjoyable!

Re: 3 month new car curse

Within a month of owning my 2012 Focus hatchback, some drunk cyclist decided around 3am to take his bike and attempt to smash car windows up and down the street.

His aim was as good as his sobriety; gone. Top roof rail and area below rear passenger window were dented in. Make no surprise, these aluminium-bodied cars are easily damaged, but costly to fix.

It took over a month for the body shop to fix and repaint the Titanium White Tri-Coat Pearl just good enough that it could pass most people's tolerance for a repaint. I could easily spot the imperfections, but just wanted my new car back. Insurance paid the $7,000 bill.

The following year, even bigger accident. Car was parked on a street corner, in front of a VW dealer. Van T-bones a car at the intersection and one of them crashed into mine. Car got towed, but cops failed to tell me. My wife was 8.5 months pregnant! Not good timing. Staff at VW kindly drove me to pick up my wife who was waiting for me at a mall, and then drove us home. Long story short, over $14,000 in damages to rear right side of vehicle. Second time the door gets replaced, but this time the whole process took almost three months! And I made sure to avoid the bozos from the first time. I ended up with slower ones instead.

Two years after the last event, I am witnessing rust bubbling under the paint, and some is flaking off, at the bottom of the wheel well. Low and behold, there's no primer. The body shop painted colour and clear only!

I am leasing the car until summer 2016. The body work they did is guaranteed for as long as I own it, so I will have them fix it before I return it. No telling how long it will take them to get this stupid pearl white paint just right.

Re: 3 month new car curse

Wow, there are some very unfortunate stories here- Fingers crossed we are all able to avoid anymore! (Everyone touch wood)

My GC is off into the shop on Tuesday I'd hoped it was just all scratched up in the paint protection layer but unfortunately it's through into the paint work. Bummer. They cleaned it up a bit for me when they quoted on it and it looks a lot better already but after the money I've paid for the car and it being so new, I don't really want to risk having issues with the paint down the track. I live in the tropics and scratches and humidity aren't the best of friends.

Haha I totally should say I was off roading in the outback, certainly sounds a lot more tough than 'I hit a carpet'!!

Yes, Jeeps are tough!. When I hit the Kangaroo in my old Jeep I thought for sure I was going to have major damage (hit it at 100km/h), only suffered a cracked bumper and a bent front quarter panel, most cars are off the road if they hit one of those things. My husband said to me it's cause they are American and made for nailing Yeti's (if any of you USA dwellers can confirm the presence of Yeti's I'll be most delighted! ) So from then on my Jeeps have been nicknamed my Yank Tanks.

Parking lot damage is so annoying, I'm that person that parks so far away from every other car I have to take a cut lunch wherever I go. People just have no respect for other peoples cars. If I do have to park next to another car, I always choose a well looked after one than a trashed one. My theory is that if they look after their own car they probably understand how frustrating it is to have some numpty damage it and will be careful with mine.

Just incase anyone is wondering, Aladin is fine, he bailed before the impact

I think the only solution is to buy a car that is at least 3 months old...

...sorry to hear about the trouble.

I have a similar issue with getting a noticeable scratch on the back gate/trunk/etc on a vehicle within 6 months. It seems like someone isn't paying attention when loading stuff into their vehicle when we're parked back to back in a lot.

Got one on a Saturn, then my F150 and now the new Jeep has one on the back gate. It's on the panel that runs below the back window, so I may suck it up and have that piece repainted. I tried doing the touch-up thing, but it was pretty deep and the sun hits it all the time, so it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I have a Deep Cherry Red GC too (I'm assuming that's yours in your pic!). My previous Jeep was the same colour as well and as beautiful of a colour it is, it's a pain for showing up every little mark, especially in the sun, let alone deep scratches! So I feel your pain!
It's annoying when someone else damages your car and you're left having to put up with it or foot the bill to fix it cause they don't have the decency to leave you a note or something
