300 mile report

Well I have about 300 miles on my 2014 Overland and I can say they have made a lot of improvements. The overall feel seems tighter and the feel of alot of the switchgear seems to of higher quality. At first I really didn't like the new gearshift but once I got the feel of it now I like it. The Hemi is great lots of power much better than the pentastar just the sound alone makes the hemi worth it. The 8 speed trans is smooth and just runs through a series of quick short shifts up to 8. The only negative I could say about the 8 speed if anything is when slowing down I feel if shift sometimes at lower speeds and seem to have some engine braking at lower speeds 20 to 30 mph but not bad. It seems they have tuned the air suspension in a little more and I also have noticed I don't hear that quick air noise from the tank I used to hear. One other thing I have noticed is the trans temp on this 8 speed runs around 190 to 200 after its fully warmed up 10 miles or so I think that is hotter than my previous one. I'm sure its normal but I might post a thread on that to see what others are seeing. Overall I am very happy with it.

Re: 300 mile report

Thanks for the report and I'm guessing your previous Jeep was a V6. What made you get the Hemi this time around?

Re: 300 mile report

How's the acceleration with the v8 and 8 speed compared to the v8 5(6) speed from the last few years?

Regarding the tranny, I'm finding that mine is learning nicely... even in ECO mode, it's far less noticeable than when i first got it. Are you noticing same? Really loving my '14!

Yes it seems to learning well... Since you have a 14 with the 5.7 maybe you could tell me what trans temps you are seeing after a good warm up 10-15 miles? Thanks

Thanks for the quick review! As far as the tranny getting hot, this is an excerpt from a mastertech tech update. gc uses same tranny as 1500 I believe:

There are two unique features introduced with the 2013 Ram truck that we’ll get into now. Introduced with the 2013 Ram trucks is a thermal management unit (TMU) (Fig. 17).
Figure 17: Thermal Management Unit
The 8HP transmission family is such an efficient transmission there is a need for an auxiliary heater to keep the transmission oil at the proper temperature, about 80C (176F).
Engine coolant is carried back to a heat exchanger via coolant pipes. In this illustration, the hoses and pipes have been color-coded to show the hot and cold portions of the system (Fig. 18). The coolant pipes and heat exchanger are serviceable separately.
Figure 18: Coolant Pipes Are Part of the TMU System

Thanks... Yes after I posted that I found an article that said they wanted to heat the fluid to 190 on the ram to make the trans more efficient. That would explain it, I had just never seen a transmission warm up like that in 30 degree weather.

I'm squarely at 12.2 MPG, city driving. 5.7L, slightly above sea level (in DC), tires at 34 PSI, and running in a combo of sport and regular D mostly.
