4.7 vs New V6

Hi,

I currently have a 2005 GC with 4.7 V8. I am looking into getting a 11/12 GC and was wondering how the V6 compares. I know that it has more HP than the 4.7 but not sure if it is offset by the extra weight. How do they compare?

Thanks

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

Good question, I'm also a little curious about opinions on this.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

I had the same decisions to make. The v6 or the hemi, I'm trading in a 07' GC with a 4.7. It was the 295 lb ft of torque in the 4.7 vs the 260 lb ft in the 3.6 that led me to buy the hemi (390 lb ft) this time around. Plus the wk2 is a much heavier truck. In everyday driving torque is the most helpful.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

I switched over from my 04 4.7HO to the new V6. I've always been a torque junky, but getting older, I tend to balance my needs more than my wants. For starters, the increase in MPG is very nice. It definately won't slam you back in the seat like the ol H.O. would, but as far as towing, it does everything my V8 did surprisingly. I definately have to give the V6 it's props.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

New V-6 is a wonderful engine. It is not designed to be exciting, nor to pull the heaviest loads. It is a smooth, quiet, and efficient engine that mates well to the Jeep for normal driving. It gives far better fuel economy and works well with the current automatic transmission to give a pleasant driving experience.
It pulls well enough within its 5,000 lb towing rating to get the job done.

What it is not, is exciting. While adaquate to pull many loads, it will never get the job done like a V-8. It will need to be in a lower gear, and require lots of throttle. It may slow down on long steep hills, and may not be the thing for heavier loads.

It is not a tire smoker. If you want excitement, get the Hemi (itself not all that exciting). If you want easy going torque, where you can simply roll on some throttle to pass a car without downshifting, the V-8 is your choice. If you need to pull heavier than 5,000 lbs, or drive on lots of hilly areas, the V-8 again will be better.

I had a 4.7... liked it. A 5.7...Loved it. and now a 3.7...it's OK.

Miss the torque and easy going V-8's, but the V-6 gets the job done, and I get over 30% better fuel economy, use regular gas, and did not have to pay $1000 extra for the V-8.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

I've wondered the same thing as I had a 06 with the 4.7. I've only been in one wk2 v6, but I'd closely relate it or say it's slightly better then the old 4.0 I6 that was standard in the WJ.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

For me its not about going fast in a SUV. If I wanna go fast, I will take my sports car out and do it right, I don't think about going fast in my SUV.
The 3.6L V6 is plenty for my uses.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

the 1st gen 4.7 felt weak to me...but the 2nd gen was a huge improvement and reacted better to mods. The 3.6 is not on the same level...IMO as the 2nd gen 4.7

I second that one. I had a 2005 4.7 that I traded in for my V6 and between the two of them it was pretty comparable. With the improvements made on the 4.7 in the later years of the WK I would have probably had a harder choice to make about the V6 vs. the V8.

Re: 4.7 vs New V6

Thanks everybody. I am not expecting the Jeep to be fast just dont want there to be a big decline in driving performance over my current 1st gen 4.7.
