Re: 4X2 on the boat ramp

I wouldn't even consider a 2wd. Price and MPG isn't that much different. Resale would make up the difference.

Re: 4X2 on the boat ramp

Don't guess, rent one and try. Personally have towed a lot of stuff including boats and never had a 4x4. 3.6 4x2 does have almost perfect weight distribution.

Y'all realize that the 4x2 WK2's have a 3 channel ABS system so it's not exactly going to have a fantastic brake traction control feature. If one wheel starts to spin on a 4x2 then the system can not apply braking power to just that spinning tire. Getting even QT1 has a 4 channel abs system, that's the main reason it performs so well for AWD especially considering the system at a mechanical level (open diffs)

Re: 4X2 on the boat ramp

Roger Ramjet, given how many times a week you are towing, launching, and retrieving your ski boat, the full 4x4 seems like a really good and useful idea. As others note, even on shallow ramps, one will frequently drop back far enough to put the rear wheels in the water. I cannot speak first hand for your area, but if algae and growth are normal conditions for ramps, the 4x4 is great peace of mind. Sure it may not be needed for DD duties in flatland, but the ski lifestyle prevails and the JGC sure is a nicer DD vehicle vs say a pick up (no offense to trucks).

Here's our rig towed frequently by the JGC. A bit big of a wake for slalom but a great family multi sport boat.

Re: 4X2 on the boat ramp

Very good point. If the WK2 4x2 has a single channel rear ABS (see sepecifications sheet), how on earth can traction control work ? Apply both brakes ? (Have tried that before with an E-brake but it does not work very well.)

Re: 4X2 on the boat ramp

RR, I'm not a boat guy, but based on the comments of a number of folks here, I'd opt for the 4x4 and be done with it. You're looking at about 1mg difference, give or take for your daily driver routine, and a lot more utility when you need it. And given you compete, you'll more than likely have to deal with a wide variety of ramps as you travel, some of which could be just over the edge of the capabilities of the 4x2.

Given dealers are working to clear out the remaining MY2013 (and any other leftover 2012 stock), you might also be able to get an outstanding deal on a new vehicle right now if you don't want to order a MY2014 which are due on dealer lots in the March time frame.

Re: 4X2 on the boat ramp

Thanks everyone, I went with the 4X4, so the ramp (or pretty much anything else) will not be a problem.
