4X2 vs 4X4 Overland v6 vs v8 prices

So, we drove a v6 Overland 4X2 today for about 3 hours. Dealer was great in letting us take it out on our own for an extended period. Last time we drove the v8 for about 20 minutes.

We've driven every SUV since then and narrowed it down to 3 vehicles with the Jeep being probably number 1 at this point

I grew up with about 4 Jeep Cherokee Laredo's, all 4x4.

We live in Metro Atlanta, and wouldn't need 4x4 that much, but maybe when I go fishing/hunting.

How does the Friends and Family pricing compare to other deals as we get that thru my wife's work.

We price out an 4x2 v6 vs 4x4 Hemi with the salesman it it's close and weird.

The Overland 4x2 with the v8 option is $1495 but the 4X4 Overland with the v8 is a $1995 issue, what's up with that?

Anyway, 4x4 Overland with v8 is $42,188 vs 4X2 Overland v8 for $38,525 Friends and Family, the v6 would knock off $1,495 form the 4x2 price, so it'd be ~$37K.

Maybe, I just need to talk it out, as I'm doing now, the v6 would save ~500/year on gas, but if I keep the 4X4 then obviously I get the weight issue but probably better used resale value. The v6 we drove was averaging 19.5mpg, so I'm hesitant on moving to the v8.

Anyway, just some general comments on pricing and use would be appreciated, thx.

Re: 4X2 vs 4X4 Overland v6 vs v8 prices

i have the V6 4X4. brought it home friday from atlanta. avg was 21.3 mpg. i set cruise at 78 until that last 50 miles and backed it down to 71 according to the gps. it has plenty of passing power; however on grades it would have to drop a gear and slowed a few mph. once i set cruise at 71 i noticed it did not drop down at all and really did not slow any. the eco also stayed on. this is my wife's and will see 90% city. If it had been bought for me i would have to go with the V8. simply because the shifting up and down is annoying and i cant do 71mph on 8 hour trips.

I'm in the same boat, this would be my wife's car, and it would mostly be Acworth - Atlanta (Buckhead) driving, but since she does commercial real estate appraisals, she'd be on the road as well. Many times, 8 hours on the road at a time.

I think the v8/4x4 would be more for me than her. What was your reasoning for the 4X4, how much weight does it add?

Re: 4X2 vs 4X4 Overland v6 vs v8 prices

Financially I think you've answered you own question, the 4X2 V6 is the right "financial" decision.

Honestly, if a 4X2 V6 meets your needs then that means you don't tow (the 5000 rating doesn't jive when you do the GCVW calculations so I have no idea where they got that number from, 3000 is more realistic) don't need 4X4 for offroad and don't need the torque advantage the V8 gives you in everyday driving. In that case I think there are a number of competitive vehicles that do the high MPG SUV thing better than the JGC.

However, if you want a high end luxury SUV then the Overland V8 is on the top of the heap right now in the under $50K price range. At that point, if you're going for the V8 then I would do the 4X4. You may not use it a lot but it opens up opportunities you don't have with the 4X2. I also think it helps resale. People think 4X4 when they thing Jeep, that's just the way it is.

Re: 4X2 vs 4X4 Overland v6 vs v8 prices

not sure about the weight. the reason i went with a 4X4 is simple...i love my wife. the system on the jeep that we bought is more like all wheel drive with the option of 4 wheel low. she goes to the beach in the summer with the kids and we like to go to the mountains around Ashville, NC in the winter. she really didnt like my dodge 2500 diesel 4X4 on long trips. her car needed to be replaced and i figured kill two birds with one stone. for some reason she ends up in sand every time she goes to the beach. the tow bills in one year will pay for the 4X4 option. i also added the gps since she forgets to take her garmin and ends up having me try to figure out where in the world she is. i guess it was more for my peace of mind.

Re: 4X2 vs 4X4 Overland v6 vs v8 prices

As a point of reference, the V8 Option on the 4X4 includes the trailer tow group, on the 4X2 is doesn't, that explains some of the pricing difference. Also remember the 4X4 Overland gets the Air Suspension, that's why it's so much more than what you would expect just for the 4X4 upgrade.

An Overland 4X2 V8 w/Tow package will be ~$38500 with the FFP pricing.
An Overland 4X4 V8 (inlcudes tow) will be $41580 with FFP pricing.

Nice, sounds like Helluva deal, as I'm not familiar with everything, what don't you get compared to an Overland besides the Quadra Tac II, 20" wheels, heat back seats, ventilated from seats, leather dash? All my Jeeps had Inline 6 motors.

i think the only other things are the sun roof, rear lcd, voice command uconnect, chrome handels, chrome mirrors, air bags, and limited slip. not enough to pay the higher price.

wow, I know rear LCD is option DVD player. big sunroof standard and she doesn't use hers now, and no desire to) and I think the uconnect is dependant on 730 stereo. The others make sense, especially the limited slip.

Curiouse question for you or others, wife loves the ventilated seats but at the same time they may be too hard. You know/think the ventilated seats cause the seats to be harder or not as they're perforated(spelling?) Hell, that might be a good argument on comfort vs $$$.

Re: 4X2 vs 4X4 Overland v6 vs v8 prices

I would go with the 4x4...better to have it then not to...that is what Jeep is known for...maybe you should look at something other than a Jeep if you do not need 4x4..personally I have the Laredo v6 and have no complaints about it..if I could have gotten the Hemi I would have...if its in your budget I highly recommend the Hemi...good luck with your decision
