Re: 4x4 and not matching tires question

QD2 locking the rear diff or traction control braking appears to be the main issue. I cant see that the diff would lock though as it rarely does in Auto mode while in high range (if at all). Traction control braking can be disabled.

Re: 4x4 and not matching tires question

I have a question...i use 275/55/20 Duractracs and have the 245/65/18 spare, and in case of use i know that i would damage the system, i know because it happened to me once and i had to druve about 40 miles this way and i felt the transmission not knowing it was a smaller tire and acting weird.

My question is when wanting to match the spare with the ones placed in the vehicles is it only the tire size that must be matched example duratracs 275/55/20 is a 31.9 tire and the 255/70/18 is a 32.1 is this OK? or do i have to match it in width, height and rim?
thanks for the help

Re: 4x4 and not matching tires question

Jeep supply an 18inch spare with the 20inch wheels with the same tyre diameter but different tyre width. Outside diameter would be what matters most.

Im interested to know, when you had the spare on you say they it behaved "weird", did anything actually break? Did you have any traction lights come on or did you turn the traction control off?

nothing did break nor lights in the cluster panel. But you could definitely feel the transmission/engine acting weird. I remembered in low speed more than in high that it shifted harder the shifts and i could hear a clumb noise also.
and usually you know your car....i knew that it was a matter of time when something bad happened. here is my thread of when it happened....

in the original thread i made a mistake placing i had a 265/60/18 spare when it is not...it is a normal 245/65/18
