It's based on decades old urban legends that synthetic oils don't allow the motor to properly break in. That has been debunked many many times and you have manufacturers providing factory fills of synthetic that pretty much disproves the myth.

BUT, you aren't going to cause any harm waiting and if that makes you comfortable then that's all that matters.

mjw930....I couldn't have said it better myself...my dad who's a retired mechanic says its best to leave the conventional oil in to let everything break in properly...then go synthetic if it makes you feel good.

I Second that . Im old school , Did my first oil filter change at 1000 miles(last week) I DID SEE SMALL METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL FILTER!!!! but filter filtered them out so It did its job.( the new cartridge filter on the 3.6L allows you to see the filter pleat.

I will do the next 3 changes in 3000 mile(Dealership does first oil change at 3000 miles for free) intervals with Conventional Oil and Switch to Full Synthetic at 12000 miles At that point I will go every 5000 miles. Thats my opinion probably overkill but other than cost and a little under hood time (Which I Like ) what harm is it doing.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change

I have always been a car enthusiast so I take pride in keeping my stuff up and maintained. I will say though that when I take delivery of my new Overland I will probably just go with the oil life monitor or the manual. When you think about it in the time that you are going to own your Jeep you will NEVER own it long enough to be able to see any negative effects (if any) of changing your oil at lower intervals that what the factory says. So unless you care about your Jeeps 5th owner in 13 years when its at 170,000 miles, I say just abide by the manual/oil life monitor. Anything less than that and your wasting your time and money.

HOWEVER, I will likely do my first oil change a little before schedule with what I use in all my cars Mobile One Synthetic.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change

FYI:

I am the original owner (and still have and plan on keeping) my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 186K on the clock. I have every intention of taking her past 200,000 miles!

Having said that, I'll probably be doing the same with my Overland. I'll be pampering her like a new member of the family! There won't be a "fifth owner", as I'll probably be enjoying the fruits of my maintenance labor with that car, as I am with my '98!

After reading what's been posted here, seems like the most informed advice I've read, is to do an Oil & Filter at 1,000 miles, replacing with Non-Synthetic. Then do one or more changes at 3,000 mile intervals with Non-Synthetic and at about 10K, switch over to Mobil One and then start doing subsequent changes at 4 - 5000 mile intervals.

I plan to drop the oil at 1000 miles then at 3000 miles and switch to synthetic Mobile 1 at that time.

Well, most informed if this were 1972 and you had a old carburated V8 under the hood

There is no reason to wait a few oil changes before switching to synthetic I dont know if some old mechanic made that up or what, but it is 100% safe to go ahead and use the oil that your going to use for the life of the vehicle at the first oil change. My 2003 Z06 vette, 2005 C6 vette, and my current 06 Z06 all came factory filled with M1 synthetic. Come to think of I think my 2008 Grand Cherokee SRT8 did as well. Not 100% sure but I think I remember it having the factory filled M1 oil cap on it.
At any rate, your idea of changing oil a couple times prior to requiring even the first oil change is a bit excessive, but since you said your the kinda person that drives a car till the wheels fall off I will say go ahead and do what makes you feel good. Not many people keep their cars that long and I think thats pretty cool. Treat your Jeep good and its going to treat you good back :-)

Enjoy that Jeep!!!! Cant wait to get mine.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change

**Don't forget about the TRANSMISSION**
With all the talk about engine oil, the fact is most times it's the transmission that is ignored and gives up the ghost before the engine. I suggest that the transmission fluid be flushed at ~30,000 miles. I also change the transfer case lube and engine coolant at 30,000 miles just for good measure. Considering the Hemi plugs need changing at 30,000 miles too it would be an easy to remember service interval. It's cheap insurance just like engine oil changes for those who keep vehicles a long time.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change

I plan to change my oil every 7 to 8k (when the lights tells me I guess). I will do an oil change at 1k but after that, I will follow the light

I agree with what everyone is saying but I dont have the time or dedication to do it more often.

The maintance cost is already high since I have to put 92 gas on the car instead of 89 (my gas station doesnt carry 89) so I will not add to it.

Actually to be honest with you I would recommend burning regular 87 octane over premium. The owners manual recommends mid grade (89 octane), but can run on 87. I do not recommend burning premium in an engine not designed for it. So this is actually beneficial to you since 87 is the cheapest.
If mid grade is not available I certainly would be running the fuel that the manual says it can run on vs using premium which its not designed to run on and save you money as well.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change

Yeah, I was surprised to see the 89 Octane recommendation for a V8 Hemi.
