I just got my Overland back from the dealer after 10K service. They used 5W40 synthetic oil.
I asked why not 5W20 and they said they use 5W40 on all the Jeeps and that it was better anyway.
My question is this...I am sure I read that the MDS very specifically needs 5W20. How true is this and does anybody know of a specific instruction from Jeep to ONLY use this?
How do I convince them? Write to Jeep in the US and get them to send me something in writing maybe?
I don't even want to think about what they will use in the diff's, TC and transmission.

It's quite simple, THEY ARE WRONG! Insist that they follow the manual or provide you with a lifetime, unlimited, no deductible warranty to cover you when their arrogance breaks your machine.
That would make me uneasy. The manual clearly states to use 5w20. This being a new rig and all have they worked on the new jeeps before? Are there quite a few 2011's in Dubai?
Not that many WK2 yet, but it has been on sale since October last year. I had a 2006 5.7 Overland and that also needed 5W20, but I just did the services myself. Can't do that with this one though because of the warranty.
The level of competence and training here is in general a problem, not only from Jeep.
BTW, they also insist on doing the services at 10 000 kms instead of the 12K as the manual says.
5W40 will dont destroy your engine.
But is out of specs for it.
You are the owner of the car and even they will change the oil for free You must ask to use the right one.
May be they just have a huge can of 5W40 and they use no matter diesel, gasoline, motorbike, boats etc etc.
But as long they are able to read the numbers and just one letter ask them to read
5...

20...
Worst case You can send mail to Jeep factory claiming Your rights about, and asking to push the garage to do as You ask, but than You need forget this dealer forever.
Sad thing is that this is the main branch, not even the closest one. I specifically go there as I tried all the rest and they are LOTS worse, but that is a story for another day.
Just a bit...last season peaked at 126.
I understand that the thicker oil might be better in hot weather, but what about the MDS then? It is not always that hot.
Wow unbelievable...and people think im crazy when I say DO YOUR OIL YOURSELF!!!! Dealerships are a joke.
You absolutely never know what a dealership does to your car. Even if they do say they put 5w20 in it how the hell do you know thats true? Then theres the filter, the quantity of oil is probably wrong, and to top it off they probably cross threaded the shit out of your drain bolt.
I will never let a dealership touch my car unless its absolutely necessary for something such as a warranty repair where I dont have a choice.

And change every 13.000km or one year or as the EVIC ask to change (the first come).

Exactly. That is the point I am trying to make, but Jeep Dealer here believes they know better than the manufacturer and insists on doing it their way.
This is interesting. I went to the dealer here to buy oil for my first oil change (4.7 V8). I asked for 5w30 as that's what I'd read was used, but dealer said they use 5w40
They used the WRONG oil for the same reason my dealer did, they have it in bulk and its easy!
Do as I did, request they change it to the CORRECT grade listed by Jeep, yes, 5W-20, at their cost for labour, and pay any difference in the oil value.
My dealer had no issues with complying, and the MDS definately works smoother.

Mobil recommends a variety of Mobil 1 oils with the following viscosities for the Overland Pentastar, assuming it has around 10k miles and is used above 0F degrees:
0W30 or 5W30
Hi Guys, I was told by a friend who is a sales rep for an oil company that suplies Jeep here in Melbourne that they always put 5w40 into the Hemi's. They buy it in bulk drums and it is just more convenient for them rather than having to carry all the different grades of oil. All I can say is I had my oil replaced with 5w40 and it doesn't run smooth under 1500-2000 RPM. In my handbook it states that the required oil is 5w20, however 5w30 may be used if 5w20 is not available (I actually have trouble finding 5w20 in auto shops). I also believe that the 6.1 liter SRT8 engine calls for 5w40.
With regard to the Service interval, my manual states 12 000 KM unless used in extreme or dusty conditions, which may explain the dealers recommendation for 10 000 KM (or maybe if on average customers come back sooner they can make more $$$).
