64K service.

So my local dealer wants $2300 for this service, admittedly about $1100 is for brake pads and rotors. So what's the remaining $1200 for --

$400 for spark plugs
Oil and filter change
New air filter
Changing the fluids in the tranny, both diffs and the transfer case

The service guy says the fluids are worn out (they were last changed at 32K service) and that Chrysler recommends this service though it's not in the OM.

He also recommended another $300 of throttle body cleaning or some such--which I declined.

Feels like a ripoff to me. In this day and age it seems like spark plugs and driveline fluids should last longer than 32K. And despite noting on the 56K service that it needed a brake job which I mentioned last week when I made the appointment they won't have pads and rotors for another couple days.

Any recommendations for a trustworthy service outfit in Northern Virginia?

Re: 64K service.

If it's not in the owner's manual..."Chrysler" isn't recommending it. And unless you are doing heavy towing, police work, taxi service, etc, those fluids (outside of engine oil) didn't need changed at 32K, either.

Here's what my manual says for 64K miles:

64,000 Miles (104,000 km) or 48 Months Maintenance Service Schedule
❏ Change the engine oil and engine oil filter.
❏ Rotate the tires, rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before 64,000 miles (104 000 km).
❏ Replace the engine air cleaner filter.
❏ Replace the air conditioning filter.
❏ Inspect the brake linings; replace if necessary.
❏ Replace the spark plugs (5.7L Engine).
❏ Adjust parking brake on vehicles equipped with four-wheel disc brakes.
❏ Change the automatic transmission fluid and filter(s) if using your vehicle for any of the following: police, taxi, fleet, or frequent trailer towing.
❏ Change the transfer case fluid if using your vehicle for any of the following: police, taxi, fleet, or frequent trailer towing.
❏ Inspect the front suspension, tie rod ends and boot seals for cracks or leaks and all parts for damage, wear, improper looseness or end play;

This is basically identical to the 32K mile service interval. (Which I coincidentally had done today along with some warranty items) Your dealer service department is trying to line their pockets with gold, IMHO...

Go to Currys in Fairfax and talk to Bobby. They'll take care of you.

Re: 64K service.

I go to Farrish, but have only used them for warranty work on the WK2. They did a Trans range sensor, replaced an evap hose and gas cap on my WJ last week $1225.
Curry's as mentioned is always good choice.

If you can operate a socket wrench, and have about an hour of time, then save yourself $350 and change the plugs yourself. The plugs cost about $50. Do not get the throttle body cleaning. Fluid change should run about $450. $1100 for a brake job sounds high. It should be 2 hours labor plus parts. I doubt that brake parts cost over $800.

Re: 64K service.

For brakes they say both pads and rotors need replacing.

Are you "hard" on brakes? I can see the pads needing done, and maybe the rotors needing to be touched up, but replacing the rotors sounds a bit much. Running with "bad" pads for a long time could conceivably damage the rotors, but...

In all the years I've been driving vehicles (since the mid 1970s) I've never had to have that kind of replacement done for brakes. Just shoes/pads.

Re: 64K service.

Do the spark plugs really need to be replaced at 32k and 64k? (First hemi)

Sorry to horn in but 16 decent Hemi plugs will cost $75-140 and it'll take 2 hours.

Basically, yes. You can squeeze more mileage but you will pay a mpg penalty and risk overall running health of the hemi. It also depends on your driving habits. Can you get 40k? Sure, most likely. Best bet is stick close to the manual recommendation.
