784 miles, 13 hours, 20.5mpg

My 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland has the V8 and four wheel drive. We had business in Phoenix today, so we drove there yesterday and back today - 784 miles. The vehicle display showed 13 hours , 2 minutes of drive time and mileage of 20.5 (flowing with traffic). We stopped for gasoline and to stretch once on the way there, and once on the way back, and once on the way back for ice cream. The ACC makes such long trips much nicer on my poor old right leg which has significant varicose veins.

Re: 784 miles, 13 hours, 20.5mpg

20.5 isn't bad at all. I currently have a 2004 Overland with the 4.7 HO which gets about 21mpg highway at best. 2 weeks ago I ordered a 2014 Overland and was debating between the V6 and V8. I ended up going with the V8 and Advanced Tech Pkg. How long did it take you to trust the ACC? Not sure if i'll be able to resist tapping the brake when coming up from behind someone. Glad to hear you are enjoying your Overland.

Re: 784 miles, 13 hours, 20.5mpg

We just recently returned from a 1700 mile round trip vacation to central Florida and overall we got 20.1 mpg.... I was pretty amazed considering we went over the Smoky Mountains to Atlanta, then over to Charleston, SC and then down to the Cocoa Beach area. Return trip was all interstate back up over the mountains outside of Ashville, NC.

The wife's 4.0 6 banger usually only gets about 22 mpg on the trip so I was pretty surprised the 5.7 did so well.

Start with the following distance as far as it will go and you won't have the urge. It started slowing before I even thought about hitting cancel. I found a comfortable distance to be one or two ticks down from max distance.

Re: 784 miles, 13 hours, 20.5mpg

When I first got my Summit, I had the ACC set to "3"...I gradually got to the point that "1" was the better overall setting because I was continually getting nailed by folks pulling in front of me with the larger, safer gap. It still happens with it set to "1" but much less often...only idiot "weavers" for the most part cut in now.

Anything north of 20mpg is great. I've managed to get as high as 24 on some trips during warm weather and with favorable terrain. 20-20.5 is about normal for me otherwise; a little less in the dead of winter unless it's a very long trip on the same favorable terrain as I get up to 24 in the summer. I rarely exceed 70mph, BTW. Above that kills mpg quickly.

Nice! I think the best I've been able to get to was 17 MPG on the reading, but that wasn't nearly as long a drive as you did. I agree the ACC has definitely paid for itself as much as I've used it so far. it makes long drives much more tolerable than having regular cruise or no cruise at all.

And on I-10 to Phoenix, speeds under 70 mph might quickly reduce your life expectancy.

Round trip from LA to Mammoth and back (~700 miles, 8000 ft elevation gain) I routinely get 21 mpg. I think the big downhill sections help more than the reciprocal uphills hurt.

If anyone's considering the ecodiesel...

Our last road trip of about 800 miles between Portland and Spokane averaged 28.5 MPG. Most of that was driving 65 MPH in Oregon and 70 MPH in Washington with 15 miles crawling at 10 MPH during rush hour and a few short trips in town for food.

It did not take long to trust the ACC, but I still keep my foot ready for the brake. Of course, ACC can not "see" some tractor-trailer signaling (if they bother) to try to pass another tractor-trailer, so you need to use the brake to avoid too-rapid slowing which could cause you to be rear-ended by other vehicles. I keep it set on the maximum following distance, but may experiment with one less level.

I happened to find an article in Popular Science from just after WWII predicting radar cruse control. Google has scanned (searchable) the entire run of Popular Science back to the beginning in 1872:

I'm still getting used to my ACC. On our 1st road trip, I found myself following some vehicles for a while before realizing that I'd dropped 2 MPH when there is plenty of room to pass them in the fast lane.

Re: 784 miles, 13 hours, 20.5mpg

FYI...it has been mentioned that the EVIC calculates mpg on a rolling 300 mile average. So your mpg are an average of the last 300 miles. On the Ecodiesel, we have a 700 mile range so the EVIC may not reflect the fillup hand calculation, especially if the driving style varies.
