Re: 8 speed transmission review

I noticed the "harsh" downshifts in the lower gears when slowing for red lights on my test drive of a 5.7L 2014 Overland, mostly in Sport Mode.

It was bad enough that I considered not placing an order.

I read a few posts by folks on this forum stating that it smoothed out for them after time. I hope that is true!

Re: 8 speed transmission review

The tranny almost has a manual transmission feel to it, especially when you get off the gas. There is no "coasting" with this tranny. It's constantly slowing you down. Not a terrible thing, just different. It's not like any other automatic transmission I have driven.

Re: 8 speed transmission review

Keep in mind that there are three, soon to be four, different engines coupled to these tranny's. The SRT & Diesel tranny's are made in Germany while the 5.7 and 3.6 get a tranny made in Indiana. I don't know what difference there is. Also the SRT defaults to ECO off while the others default to ECO on. I've never turned on ECO yet.
Jus' sayin'.

The 5.7 gets the exact same model code transmission as the CRD and the SRT. Why would just that one come from a different place. I see maybe the light duty one for the 3.6 possibly coming from elsewhere but the HD that goes in the RAM is the same unit.

There was a comment in another thread about the rough down shifts in sports mode because it's trying to keep a higher RPM so that you can have that better acceleration available. In ECO mode, I don't notice a hard shift anymore, but I have about 3,500 miles on mine. I didn't notice it during a test drive either. I spend most of my acceleration in sports mode, driving in ECO, and downtown driving with ECO off and all are very smooth for me. I like the new transmission and its better than some other cars we tested especially the Equinox. I like the shifter. It's comfortable for me to rest my hand on the center console and "shift" between modes. I have no issues finding a gear and don't have to double check. I'm extremely happy with my V6 Overland.

I've read in several different places that the trans is different. I don't have verification though.

Only the 3.6 version were being made by Chrysler, and has a different part #.

It was mentioned that eventually Chrysler will be making them all. On the initial order form it should say "built" or "bought" next to the transmission type. Mine, with a 5.7 said bought.

This slow down isn't caused by the transmission:

"The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s new Eco Mode alters the shift schedule and manages the interactive deceleration fuel shut-off (IDFSO), which cuts fuel delivery when the vehicle is coasting." - allpar.com review

The engine is actually turned off while you are coasting! It does it in all modes, but i think they call out the Eco mode in the review because it is much quicker to cut fuel when it is turned on.

This may have something to do with it, Iam sure the tranny is working together with this fuel cut off thing. All I know is when you get off the gas something is rapidly slowing you down. BTW, personally I never, ever, use the ECO mode.

Always knew the best transmission was the 5 speed but mated to the crd engine, 5 longer gears work beautifully with the crd's superior torque, so much less gear shifting alway makes for a much more relaxing drive!

Completely disagree. Had 7 in my ML and it stays much closer to the torque sweet spot.... once the programming is tweaked no one will want anything less than 8 gears..... anybody still wishing they had a 3 speed?
