Actually yes... i had no problem with a 3 speed.. i never had one throw me forward when slowing down.. or have to stand on the gas and wait and wait to get it to go..

Also... better milage? I am getting 17mpg city.. and i don't drive hard at all, my 98 dakota with a 5 speed manual gets over 20 around town (i drive it like a baby though)

I would kill for a manual in the jeep

Re: 8 speed transmission review

My 5-speed in my 2011 was not ideal but it learned over the last several years and is now relatively perfect. The car performs night and day from when I originally picked it up. I assume this one will learn as well. An added bonus is the Hemi really improves with age.

Several years sounds a little excessive to me. How many miles were you putting on in 1 year? I just hated my 5 speed in my 2013 and just upgraded to the 8 speed in 2014 and only have 550 on it.

Re: 8 speed transmission review

I have a 2011 Laredo X with the v6/5speed. Made the mistake last week of driving a Max Steel Overland V6 w/8speed. What a difference it makes. DW said "I want one" so now we are looking hard. Thankfully, trade in on the 2011 seems to be strong, so maybe.............

I've noticed the same thing with my 2012 V8 Overland. I even took it into the dealership service department because I thought it was a PROBLEM.

Whatever this is, it sucks. It feels like there is something lugging down the transmission and/or engine once you release the gas pedal.

Agreed,

I dont think it is the fuel shutoff. The transmission is downshiftiing almost as soon as i take my foot off the gas. then once I apply more gas to keep up with traffic I get a lurch since i am in a lower gear. I have learned to apply very little pressure on the pedal to alleviate this. I should not have to work this hard!!! This occurs in both eco and non-eco modes. I have 3500 miles and i have not noticed any improvement. Dealer told me its "normal"

I think you and those of us who actually own these 8 speed transmissions have more knowledge of what is "normal". The 8 speed seems to have some quirks that hopefully we will learn to live and drive with.

Re: 8 speed transmission review

The fact that we have 5 pages on this thread talking about the shifter suggests there is an issue with the implementation. Yea I too am still getting used to it.

Actually there are about two pages worth of "shifter" posts. I am assuming from the thread title and post #1 we were talking about the transmission not necessarily the shifter.

Re: 8 speed transmission review

How does the 8 speed do while towing? I've got a 4,500lb camper that I will be towing around the NW. We have a lot of steep...long hills to climb (& descend).

Oddly enough mine feels better while towing. No complaints there. You can paddle
Shift to start in second and keep gears low if needed. I towed about 3500lbs last week and it felt great.
