I am buying the 2014 because of the 8 speed and the towing capabilities. If you get the V8 or the Diesel it is the exact same transmission going into the RAM. It is clearly designed for a heavier duty cycle than the old 5/6 speed)

YES!! That is what they should have put in the jeeps as they did with ram trucks and new Durangos.

Earlier this year we bought a new truck for me (13 Ram 1500 sport) and new Jeep for fiancee (14 Limited with all options other than air suspension) If we could go up to a summit and have no air that is where we would be. However you can only go as high up as a limited to not have air suspension or nitrogen or whatever. Anyway getting back on topic. She came from a 11 Laredo with the v6. Wards best engine my a**. Had an oil leak in the upper manifold and dealer would not fix it under their 100k warranty. So we went out looking for a 13 to replace it earlier this year only to find out the 14s are ready for order. Kind of pissed me off since I just bought a new truck and here she is a month later getting a year newer vehicle and it was only just the beginning of the year . Four oil changes later her Jeep has a little over 17000 miles on it already. From beginning the trans kind of had a little shudder at 20-30mph. It does it random and I believe she always has the eco button on. At first we read up on here its a learning trans and all that jazz. Nope almost at 20k miles and it still does it. Something for the rest of you too look forward too. Other than that everything has been great other than the instrument cluster going out twice I think. We fixed that with disconnecting the battery though. Odd thing to me is the new rams with the 8 speeds are flawless. So why is the same powertrain in the jeeps having issues? Also anyone know why the Hemi in the Jeep is rated for less power than the trucks as well??? So much for a first post huh? Thanks guys

Re: 8 speed transmission review

I think the extra hp in the ram and SRT jeep is the difference maybe. I definetely havent heard any of the 14 SRT guys complain about the tranny. I know its night and day between my 14 with the 8 speed Zf and my 13 with the 5 speed.

Re: 8 speed transmission review

I know why the srt has more hp.(6.4) but why does the ram? Its the same motor is it not. Also is the srt zf different than the 5.7 hemi? I think the v6 one is but is there yet another difference going to the srt?

Re: 8 speed transmission review

I would think the RAM has more room for freer flowing exhaust headers, that is often the difference between two sizes of vehicles that use the same motor with different results.

I would also think the RAM uses a dash shifter so the you can seat 3 across in front. I have to disagree with that being preferred as I think the console shifter is great when I want something to rest my hand on or toggle between drive and sport.

It took a while to get used to but other then when I have to quickly stop and then back up (like to turn around) I like it.

360hp for the Jeep vs 395 for the Ram. That is one hell of an exhaust system. The 14 Durango uses the dial shifter as well. I don't have a problem with the shifter itself in the jeep, just the way it feels or lacks of I guess. I would just prefer the gated shifter without a button instead I guess. Like you said the first three point turn I tried doing with the jeep I thought I was going to get hit with traffic. Made me look like I did not know how to drive.

As far as the power ratings, I think the Jeep is tuned down via the computer system for a bigger separation between it and the SRT models.
