About to buy. Any last minute advice?

Shockingly, this Jeep will be my first new car. Ever. I don't know how I've been driving this long and never purchased a new car (aside from my wife's CR-V). What should I look out for? I've got that "delivery checklist" thread open on my phone so I can reference it.

Any other words of wisdom?

Re: About to buy. Any last minute advice?

Check or print out the first page of the sticky for ordering and pricing. At least you know how much negotiation room you have.

The hardest part, IMHO, is walking away from paying too much. Remember a dealer is in the business of profit making.

Re: About to buy. Any last minute advice?

Know what you want before even going to the dealer. Do your shopping online, check pricing for the trim level you want. Secure your financing, Penfed is good one right now. If the dealer can beat that right, then let them.

Know what you want, don't shop on impulse, know the costs and READ everything on the sale before signing. And only GET what YOU want, not what the dealer says you should have-otherwise, factory order or walk away (shopping around here in NJ, a $40,580 MSRP Limited Turned into $44 something after all the dealer installed option I did not want). But yeah, secure financing as leverage too(and know value of your trade if any.

Re: About to buy. Any last minute advice?

Honestly, if you have not already secured a pricepoint for the rig you want (either built to your specs or one on the lot that you want), don't go into the store.

Use email/phone calls to work several dealers at once and leverage each of them against the other.

If you find a raging good deal at Dealer A, but Dealer B has your rig, ask Dealer B to meet/beat that offer.

If they won't ask Dealer A to see if they can get the rig transferred to their store (or see if an exact match is in transit that they can have switched to them).

Once on site, make sure to test drive the vehicle (and not some crappy ass 10-30 minute spin around the block). A good dealer will have you sign a paper, take your insurance and drivers license and let you take the rig for a couple hours. While doing so, go over your delivery list, make sure everything is good to roll.

If not, note it and make sure to get it in writing form the dealer at time of signing they will fix it at no additional cost to you.

And most importantly READ the contract. Look for sneaky crap in there that may add to the cost of the vehicle or otherwise differs from your agreed upon pricepoint (again, make sure you have in writing from them, what you are buying and a cost for each add-on) so that you can compare/contrast with their offer at signing.

If they change or the numbers don't line up, make sure everything is there (if it's lower than expected), if everything is present, but the price is different, have them explain exactly why and HAVE YOUR WRITTEN AGREEMENT HANDY with your pricing.

In my negotiations, I have them write everything down before I ever set foot in the dealership:
  • My price on the base trim
  • My price per package (so, CRD, Advanced Tech Group, etc...)
  • Tax
  • Title
  • License
  • Prep fee (if they have one)
  • Final "out the door" price for me
If you have a trade, shop it around to see what other dealers would give you for it (if it's in good shape, decent miles, and have good maintenance records, most dealers will offer to buy your car outright).

I completely agree with him!

Well I have to say, real-time updates from the dealer might be more exciting than the sno job of waiting for a vehicle sitting in a ship yard. HA!

Re: About to buy. Any last minute advice?

They're detailing it tonight and I'll pick it up in the morning. They were too low on my trade so I'll be selling it privately. Anyone want a beautiful 2010 335d?!?
