Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

CaptRB

After two months and 2,000+ miles with my October/November 2011 build 2012 Overland 4x4 HEMI with ORA II Package, I'd recommend the 2012 GC to my mother if I thought that it would fit her needs. I think Jeep has corrected most of the problems that some first model year 2011 GCs have had. I haven't had any. Really.

Best of luck to you, whatever car you choose.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

Thanks for the comments. I'm leaning strongly towards the Overland Summit V8, but may wait a bit longer to see what the buzz is on another tranny (if any) for the Hemi.

Thanks again,

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

Every car mfg. has their own set of problems. Ford prior to last year had a stellar record for two years straight then it all fell apart. However, before those two stellar years most people would say garbage when they think of Ford.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I would read on the forums. I never pay much attention to Edmunds, Car and Driver etc. On the forums you get all the good and bad from real owners.

I owned previous Jeeps when they were really made by "Jeep". My last one was when Daimler owned them. Never been much of a Chrysler or Dodge fan so I went away for a while doing the BMW thing.

I see the same on the BMW forums as here. Mostly happy owners but those have have issues.

I am concerned about the Chryler influence?...Yes. But I see enough of the German influence and the re styling really brought me back to give them a try. First GC that caught me attention since about 2000.

Robert, I've read in the mainstream car mags that both the v6 & Hemi JGC for 2013 model years will have 8-speed trannys.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I have a fairly early 2011 build (September 2010) and have had no problems with the vehicle so far. In fact out of my last 3 vehicles this one has had the fewest trips back for warranty work.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I get at least one new vehicle every two years, sometimes two. I have had 3 previous JGC's, an Acura, a few Toyotas, a few Dodges, a few Fords a bunch of GM's and a Subaru, which I just got rid of.

My experience is mixed, with all of the brands, foreign and domestic. The Acura was my biggest disappointment. Excellent performance, crappy reliability and service, despite the pastries and leather seating in the service waiting area. GM quality in the 90's was so bad I swore I'd never buy another. I said the same thing after the crap Chrysler was putting out in the 80's, but changed my mind after they launched the LH platform. I switched from an 08 JGC Limited with QDII and the 4.7 V8, which was phenomenal in the snow ( Traveled back and forth between Cleveland and Buffalo regularly.) to a 10 Subaru Outback 3.6 Limited. Great gas mileage compared to the JGC, great in the snow, crap reliability. I'm back in a 12 Overland with the 5.7 V8 and I'm as pleased as could be with it so far. I've rolled 3000 miles since Thanksgiving, averaging almost 17 MPG mixed driving and can say I have no regrets.

These online communities are great for getting information and asking questions, but often one gets the "polar extremes" owners who love their vehicles and those who have problems. It was the same way on the Subaru site. Every manufacturer experiences problems, some people are lucky and never have or notice the problems, others have nothing but problems.

My experience is the dealer makes all the difference. Find one with a good service department, sales staff who've been there for a while and one who can and will act as your advocate and you'll most likely be happy even if you experience problems. Have a dealer who is inept, uncaring or unethical and you have the recipe for a miserable experience.

That's a decent idea, have owners rate or share their experiences with their dealers, that way we could all benefit from the community's collective experience, hopefully rewarding the best dealers with business, and avoiding those dealers that don't add to a positive ownership experience.

Good luck!

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I have never had a vehicle that hasn't had some sort of issue, but the 2001 Toyota Highlander that I still have was the most reliable vehicle so far. Only started to have problems on it after 100K miles (some a bit expensive but many due to wear/exposure), but it runs well at 195K miles.

We did test drive the 2011 Highlander, and while decent, it wasn't anywhere near as nice to drive as the GC. We also do some towing and the GC is better suited for that.

My other daily driver is a Volvo which aside from a few minor issues has been rock solid for 42K miles.

In 16K miles on my early build 2011, I've had a brake rattle clip installed (missing), some software updates, and the dealer is working on tracking down an A/C system leak. I have had some other noises/behaviors that I will get checked at some point but nothing that requires an extra trip to the shop.

My own short experience is that the quality and service experience of the Jeep isn't quite up to the level of my Toyota or the Volvo, but it's better than any other vehicle I've had so far. I am still considering the extended warranty (to 100K miles) but I will see how things go for a bit. On the whole I do not in any way regret the decision to get the Jeep.

This is my first "American," car too. I took a chance this year and so far so good. I come from a long lineage of Toyota/Lexus models.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

FWIW, I just passed 4500 miles on my 2012 Overland Summit and so far I haven't had a single problem with the vehicle (knock on the real wood trim).

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I was in the same boat after I came to the realization that my sports car had to go and I needed a quality SUV.

I wanted something nice, so I looked at several choices, including:

Porsche Cayenne
Audi
BMW X5
Land Rover
Jeep

I was seriously afraid to try an American vehicle after so many years because of the reliability concerns, which is seemingly unfounded. I was previously driving foreign brands with zero problems. I couldn't resist the temptation this time to try something else after seeing a few newer Grand Cherokees on the road. They just have such a nice look to the exterior and they are vehicles that aren't built like the other fluff crossovers. Long story short, I went to a dealer to check them out and I was so impressed with how much you get for you money vs the other vehicles and how nice the Jeeps were that I figured I'd be stupid not to try it.

No regrets at all. On impulse, I went with an overloaded Laredo X with most all options on it: pearl black w/ the hemi, pano roof, 430n, off-road pkg 1 w/selec trac. It was the only V8 on the lot, so I skipped over the V6 limited models around the same price point.

I just ordered the mopar chrome accents and the mopar tubular side steps. I can care less about the HID lights and memory seats I would have had on the limited. I'm a happy camper and the Jeep got me through some snow in upstate NY this last week.

I see more Jeeps in my future if they keep making them like this. I always have something new every 2 or 3 years and my GF is already in line for my Jeep if I want to get a newer one in a couple years. It's everything I could ever want in an SUV. I just hope they don't gimp the GC's offroad performance!

Later!

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

Today is January 6th 2012 and I just picked up my 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland Summit. Traded my infiniti m45x. (Japanese) So far I absolutely love this Jeep. I see so many on the roads here in PA.....I'm sure there is a reason why. For the price and what you get no other SUV can touch it
