Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I've never intentionally bought an american car either. I did sell my Nissan xTerra for a priced $2000 under blue book Chrysler Sebring at one point. I called this car the "debt punishment" because i sold my nice xTerra to pay off some credit card debt. I only paid $3000 for it. It wasn't a bad car for the year that I had it and I had no problems.

But other than that I have never considered buying american until now. I had major doubts about reliability for JGC and then I decided to roll the dice and get the extended warranty. But now that I've ordered the car and am waiting for it, I'm back to having some doubts. I think it just gets worse the more forum posts you read about all the problems people have.

I'm been driving a Hyundai Santa Fe Limited for the past five years and have had zero problems but looking in the Santa Fe forums is a nightmare. Apparently the recent Santa Fe's are riddled with transmission problems. It's enough to make me not want to buy another one even though I haven't had any problems.

And I think that's true for any car - read enough forums and you see major problems with all of them. And plenty of people experience zero problems.

I do think Jeep/Chrysler is not as reliable as other car manufacturers but having the extended warranty backed by Chrysler offers some peace of mind.

The problem is that I can't find another SUV with the luxury and options of JGC that has been as well reviewed and that is in this price range.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm a boat broker and as it turned out I found a client who also works at a dealership. I spoke to him at length and he essentially said that the new Cherokee has been highly reliable, equaling several of the Japanese cars they service. I was surprised when he told me that they've had very few issues with the lifting system, though he'd heard that some early cars had issues. I then visited a local dealership and carefully inspected the Overland and spoke with some of the grunts in the service center. Long-story-short, I'm feeling pretty good about buying the Overland. I understand that I could still run into problems, but that's possible with any car. Three years ago I rolled the dice and bought a Mitsubishi Outlander. They had also fought back with better quality control and designs with that car and the amazing Evo X. I've not had a single problem with the Mitsu. I'm hoping that the Jeep will be the same.
One thing is for certain....we looked at X5, Q7, LR4 and the Highlander. If SERIOUS road conditions are a factor (for us it's heavy snow) I don't see another midsize SUV that can match what the Overland can do. With it's suspension raised to maximum and with the right tires it should best even the legendary Toyota Landcruiser in deep snow. Add to that the amazing comfort and luxury (better than the X5 BTW) and it's an amazing vehicle.
Now I'm just trying to decide how long to wait.....diesel, 8 speed.....or buy sooner....we'll see.

Thanks again...great forum!

Don't forget the 2011/2012/+ exterior styling looks better than any other vehicle too! The X5 looks nice too, as does the Q7 and LR4 I put just behind those in looks.

Good move -- you'll probably be happier than Tim Tebow with new kneepads.

The 2012 WK2 is reliable, yes, but the 730N media center/nav has suffered from memory wipeouts for a year, now. Who knows whether they plan to address this shortly with a TSB, or later with either a new radio or a change in the vehicle's wiring.

It's yet another reason to consider waiting for the 2013 model if you're in no rush.

i agree. i checked out the MDX and i *hate* the front of it. i also dislike the interior of the RX350. The JGC is just perfect imo.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

My neighbor has a 2010 or 2011 Acura MDX, black in color. I wonder what he thinks of my new brilliant black Overland. His last SUV was a silver Grand Cherokee (2005-2007) just like mine, but he bought the Acura MDX before the new 2011 Grand Cherokee was even available.

Slightly OT, but I saw a black SRT8 yesterday in Doylestown (PA). Black, IMO, looks better on an Overland or any other but for some reason doesn't quite hit the bull's eye with the SRT.

Re: Afraid to Buy a 2012 GC

I was concerned about buying a 2011 WK2 with all the mechanical and electronics options, but after 13 months not a single problem. And if a problem ever happens I have a lifetime bumper-to-bumper warranty. I had my '93 Grand Cherokee until I replaced it with the WK2 in December 2010.

I also have a Lexus ... the expensive navigation system had to be replaced 3 months after it was out of warranty. So much for Japanese quality trumping American cars.

Not sure how you overlooked the 4Runner. It's a direct competitor to the Grand Cherokee.

To each their own, but I test drove each vehicle (actually the Pathfinder was the V6) and neither have the refinement of the Jeep. Didn't like the new 4Runner at all.
