It wouldn't surprise me that the statist paradise of California has outlawed all but one model of CAI, but how do you know that to be the case? Can you cite a penal code number, DOJ letter, or case history that leads to that conclusion?

You need a CARB (California Air Resources Board) exception sticker, otherwise you will be allowed to pass the smog test. K&N clearly states that their unit is NOT legal in California. If K&N is willing to leave untapped sales in the most populous state there must be a good reason. Although I can't imagine the two units are very different!

I looked it up, and wow, what a charlie-foxtrot. For a device to be CARB-compliant, it must be submitted for testing by the manufacturer for a specific make/model/year. Manufacturers must pay the state to conduct the testing and issue the determination. Even if a K&N was approved for a 2010 Tacoma (just to make a random example), they'd have to resubmit it for testing to get it approved for 2011 Tacoma's. Multiply by all compatible vehicles, per year, and that's a bunch of effort and expense.

So basically they'll pay to get CARB exemptions for their most popular products, and the less popular ones are SOL. Here's the CA website where you can see the lists of approved aftermarket devices: Database: Aftermarket Parts Database of Executive Orders

The parts are not likely different at all! It seems to be purely a paperwork thing.

I'm CA born and raised, but I cannot wait to leave this %@#(&ing state.

Smog Checks and CO Monitors are other ridiculous laws in the golden ($) state!! New cars barely log any PPMs yet we have to pay for smog tests every couple of years. And our homes are required to have carbon monoxide monitors now ... made sense in my boat but not house.

I added some reflective insulation around the heat seat to reduce the amount of heat in the engine bay getting near the air intake.
More observations after a few months with the Mopar CAI:
* The engine seems to run a little cooler!
* The average MPG seems to have increased by 0.5 MPG (3%)!

I am assuming this is because the engine is breathing better, therefore able to maintain speeds with less energy.

Did any of you factory order your WK2.5 with a Mopar intake? Jeep has a factory custom shop that will install Mopar parts before it's delivered. It gets put on your window sticker and is financed with the rest of the Jeep. I might do that with the Mopar rock rails, CAI, and exhaust.
