A fair question! From the Wikipedia article:

"However, a 2008 U.S. study by NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) suggests vehicles with amber rear signals rather than red ones are up to 28% less likely to be involved in certain kinds of collisions, and a 2009 NHTSA study determined there is a significant overall safety benefit to amber rather than red rear turn signals."

I personally notice the amber signals much more quickly at night. The "bad" scenario is a vehicle stopped in a traffic lane to make a left turn, where there are multiple lanes of traffic. All the red tends to get a little lost in the "noise", IMHO.

I do not see anyway to get them to work separately either.
Jeep2011 and Robpp, thanks to you both! What an great community this is... we must have been pulling our rear lamp housings at the same time!

I also did find the "alternate" connector wiring for the two pin connector to the clear part of the housing, for export vehicles. In that case, of course, instead of a reverse light, it is the turn indicator. Since they change the trace color on the wires, clearly it is a different harness.

Re: Amber rear turn signals (Euro parts?)

good deal.

im not saying that its impossible but it would be real difficult and cutting into harnesses.
one of my goals was 'NOT ONE CUT or SPLICE into the main harnesses.

i almost ran a blink wire from the front and a brake wire for the center light. that would have been the last step but i felt that might not be 'trustworthy'. but it could have been done that way.

anyway be sure to keep sight of that connector site. its a good reference for LOTS of ELECTRICAL things at least until service manuals hi t the net

lots of cars sold in US have amber rear turns. i dont think it would be a problem. US law is red or amber. euro spec is AMBER. its like headlight washers. the exports have them. us dont. its all about bean counters and such. but since ONE taillight could be good workldwide you wonder about jeep making 2 different ones. waste of money.

Re: Amber rear turn signals (Euro parts?)

robpp, that site is awesome. Thank you for sharing!

I did post last fall about making the change to the euro blinker as well. I personally like the look of a yellow blinker better, but I hate most when a brake light is deactivated for use as a blinker. I have no need for dual reverse lights (they are still not bright enough on a trail for reversing at night) and I am with you both on why would they make this particular change for the US spec over the euro....seems like a waste of money to me.

I still wonder if purchasing the euro harness would do the trick.

Re: Amber rear turn signals (Euro parts?)

well guys, my US Spec Laredo 3.6 WK2 will arrive in Sweden on March 7th. I have one week to get it to Euro spec and I've found one shop that says they can do it. I kinda trust them as they do all US cars into EURO spec. Will keep you posted as to when the container with my cars arrive, and how http://www.exclusivecars.se progresses with the conversion.

Congrats on the new ride coming in soon! Please keep us posted on what is required to convert the rear lights.

On a side note. I find it funny that looking at all the US brochures you can see the orange bulb occupying the spot in question.

Re: Amber rear turn signals (Euro parts?)

Hello,

I recently bought a 2012 GC Limited. I am a German Soldier currently stationed in the US and I will take the GC back to Germany after my tour.

Having that said, I face the same problem and I am highly interested how to change the red blinker to the amber one.

As far as I know, German mechanics pick the front turn signal, wire it back and use a relay to steer the rear blinker. However, that doesn't switch of the red 'brake' lights for blinking.

My most important question would be, where to get the wiring diagrams from?

Thanks
Alex

Re: Amber rear turn signals (Euro parts?)

I recently purchased a 2013 JGC Limited and I would like to modify the turn signal so that I have an amber blinker separate from the red brake light? Has anyone had success to date with this mod? Is it possible to buy a different harness to get this working or is splicing wires necessary? Any advise is highly appreciated...

BTW this is my first post to jeepgarage.com

Re: Amber rear turn signals (Euro parts?)

Hi,

i have an Grand Cherokee Overland CRD MY 2012 and i am here in germany located.
my tail indicator is just an amber coloured bulb.
i think the harness will be different to the US-model.

So, a change of these bulbs wont help you with your US-model.

Thank you very much for the info. It will be my project for the next month; running wires from the front blinker to the rear as well as rear fog and a circuit for the brake signals.

Shall be fun ;-)
