The Grand Cherokee absolutely DOES warn you of obstacles on the side. Atleast those with cross path detection and I believe all SRT's have that feature. Infact when I back out of my garage it beeps and shows me visually on the evic that the side of the garage door opening is there all the way till it passes my rear wheels.
He hit the pole on the DRIVERS DOOR while he was turning. No sensors on the drivers door. Cross traffic depends on motion...a poie doesn't move. I'm sure he saw it as he started to back up...he just thought he was clear.
I personally find the backup sensors in the Jeep pretty useless. They go off way too early, so its really easy to just tune them out as background noise, and the way the beeps work make it hard to tell just from the sound how close you are to something. I find the backup camera way more useful. If I wasn't used to the Lexus' sensor system I might think differently, but that system is much better.
