DE does not charge for inspection specifically but I am sure it is figured in as part of the annual registration fee. New cars can be registered for 5 years. After the first 5 years max registration term is 2 years and inspection is required at each renewal.

Sounds like even when you are picking up a brand new vehicle from the dealer, NYS still requires a state inspection? Why?

For initial and the following inspection NYS only requires a safety inspection. After that, on a county by county basis (determined by the feds) an emissions test is required. ---

Umm, because it is a government?
And they never met a tax or fee they couldn't fall instantly in love with.
Several states have annual safety inspections where any burnt out bulb will flunk you.
Some even require pulling wheel to check brake shoe/pad life.

NYS requires all new cars to pass a safety inspection. That is what the dealer charged you $10.00 for.

New vehicles sold in NYS that meet federal emissions standards are exempt from the additional emissions inspection for several years (three I think), before they have to pass both annually. Emission inspections are required for most downstate regions but are not required in many less populous upstate areas.

The $37.00 inspection fee covers both the safety and emission inspection charges for those vehicles registered in regions that require both to be performed.

Re: Annual state inspection.

We don't have a mechanical inspection here in CT - just emissions, which was $20 last time I had it done.

There's no emissions on motorcycles, since many can't be connected to the computer.

Re: Annual state inspection.

Wisconsin - no inspection, emissions check every other year after 1st year of ownership - until a vehicle reaches 20 years old, then no emissions inspection either. Emissions test costs $0.00, you get a pass/fail which will/won't allow you to purchase your annual registration sticker. Registration sticker costs based upon what type of plate you have - mine is $81 as a Wisconsin Firefighter.
