Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

I am looking for a good quality trailer hitch bike rack, something that will hold 3 to 4 bikes. what would you recommend?
Thanks, Ron

Re: Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

I have the Yakima hitch rack. It is nice but the straps that hold the bike are starting to dry rot after 2 seasons. You can buy more but I was hoping they would last longer. Other than that, it is the best bike rack I have used. It is easy to get the bikes on and off and it pivots out so you can open the door/truck without removing the bikes.

Re: Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

OP, what kind of bikes: road, mountain, downhill mountain, kids?

Reason being if you're looking at a mix of all except burly mountain bikes, then the style that holds the bikes in the rack via two extended arms under the frame triangle is best. Note you'll need a large enough rack to handle 3-4 rigs.

Otherwise, if you have burlier downhill bikes and a bunch of expensive other rigs, then the style that uses trays to hold the bikes via their tires are best, though it will cost you a lot more for these types of bike racks.

Check out Thule and Yakima first. If you get fired up to drop more coin on the tray style there are a few other specialized versions available.

In general, it's good to pay a bit more here for a quality rack, both for the sake of your vehicle and your bike gear.

Cheers.

This is what my friend uses on his Q7 and has loaned to us to use on our Expedition...haven't tried it on the WK2 yet. It has a bit of "wobble" in the 2" hitch receiver as many of them do but I particularly like the fold down feature. The only thing you might need to be wary of is if you have a full suspension bike with a Y-frame or other high-clearance geometry frame like the Trek Liquid 55 that one of our friends has; it is difficult to mount on theses kinds of hitch racks. It is workable, but difficult compared to other types of bikes.

Re: Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

I looked at that Yakima rack first (because they're built in my part of the country.) Reviews on a few sites suggested that the nut on the bolt that attaches to the trailer hitch will come loose and must be checked regularly. I ended up buying the Thule Ridgeline. It's solid in my Overland's two-inch hitch, installs and removes easily, and after the first setup it's easy to get my bikes on and off.

One caveat: you absolutely cannot get four adult bikes on this or any comparable rack. I rearranged the pads on the bars and can load three bikes.

Softride. Plenty of heft, good price, soft mounts don't damage paint. Found at finer bike stores or on Amazon.com

The bike rack will be used with a mix of mountain bikes. 2 adult mountain bikes and a child's mountain bike. The tray type rack ight be the best option because mine is carbon fiber. What brand would you suggest that is the tray type?
Thanks,

Re: Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

I have this Yakima on my WK with no complaints. Works well for every type of bike I have from road to downhill. It does great!

Re: Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

As someone else mentioned above, I also have the Thule Ridgeline. Its a 4 bike, however I havent ever tried 4 bikes yet, 2 thus far which fit fine.

Re: Any one recommend a good trailer hitch bike rack?

I've had my bike rack for a few years without any faults or wear. Originally by Sportworks but patent bought out by Thule with an increased price. I love it and use it daily during the summer months. It has an anti-wobble feature and it's bolted to the hitch plus lock.

It's now the Thule 917XTR and has a 2 bike add on feature (total of 4 bikes).

Other very good racks are:
Yakima Holdup 2
Kuat Sherpa (aluminum, 27 lbs.)

This is mine on my previous Overland.
